Richard Young Photography

Richard Young Photography I spend little time on social media and I just maintain this page for a few updates. He also teaches photography via a number of Online Courses and eBooks.

If you wish to keep up with my latest work and creative thoughts, please consider subscribing to my newsletter at www.richardyoung.co.nz/contact Richard’s photography has been recognised in numerous international landscape photography competitions, including winning the ‘Best Landscape’ at the Banff Mountain Photography Competition in 2010. Over recent years he has changed his approach to landscap

e photography, focusing on the emotional and expressive engagement in the landscape he works to produce a more personal body of work. His work has been widely exhibited across New Zealand, Canada, America and England in solo and group exhibitions along with in his own gallery space for seven years up until 2020. His passion for creating exquisite prints and his knowledge of fine-art printing has led him to become an ambassador for Epson Printers. He has spent time exploring some of the country’s most remote and wild places, working to photograph his response to awe-inspiring and unspoilt landscape. His views on landscape photography have been published in books and magazines, including a monthly column for NZ Photographyer Magazine. He has guided groups of photographers in New Zealand since 2010 and founded New Zealand Photography Workshops in 2013. He has a passion for teaching photography, working to motivate and inspire people on his workshops.

Experience Antarctica in this immersive video that shares the lightbox experience on Auckland’s waterfront that was featured as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography. Watch on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62JcLBNddoo

This exclusive suite of work was selected by the Festival as part of this year’s theme of ‘Sustain’ [tautīnei] that examines the intense, often conflicting interplay between human survival, environmental limits, and ethical awareness. Encouraging us to question our role within a larger framework and to consider what it means to care for our planet and all forms of life. The work was exhibited on eight lightbox panels on Auckland Waterfront at Karanga Plaza, Auckland, 23 May – 12 June 2025.

I will be guiding another photography expedition to Antarctica in 2026 with New Zealand Photography Workshops and Heritage Expeditions, see: https://photographyworkshops.co.nz/tour/antarctica-photography-expedition/

I will be doing a free photo walk in Auckland tomorrow with Auckland Festival of Photography and Nikon New Zealand

Hope to see you there if you can make it!

✨Auckland Photo Walk - Wednesday, 11th June ✨

📷 Photographers! As part of the Auckland Festival of Photography, Richard Young will be doing a free photo walk on Wednesday evening. Please see details below for anybody interested in coming along:

Auckland Photo Walk: Antarctica Light-boxes
171 Halsey Street · Auckland
Wednesday, June 11, 2025
6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Discover Richard Young's work from Antarctica that is being displayed in eight 2m high light-box panels on the Auckland waterfront as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography.

Meet Richard at the light boxes where he'll introduce his work before exploring the waterfront on a casual nighttime photo walk. This is a great chance not only to see Richard's work box but also meet other photographers in Auckland and explore the city after dark.

The plan is to spend two hours walking along the Auckland waterfront, photographing the city at night. We will finish the walk at a local bar around 8 pm for anybody that wishes to stay on to socialise and have a drink.

Hope to see you there!

At the start of May, I spent a really enjoyable few days exploring some favourite autumn landscapes with inspirational UK photographer, filmmaker, and author Sean Tucker, resulting in some of my best work from the season. While we were together, Sean filmed some beautiful footage of me working in the landscape, which he artfully composed into a documentary about my approach to landscape photography for his YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MxIDqbDB3M

I encourage you to buy Sean’s book, The Meaning and the Making. It is an inspiring read and helped me to explore what drives me—as a creative person—along with the sense of balance I require to create personal and unique work. It is also available as an audiobook, which is beautifully narrated by Sean himself.

Make sure you also subscribe to Sean’s YouTube channel and explore some of his past videos; I particularly enjoyed his ones with Margaret Soraya and Simon Baxter.
