I’ve been a bit quiet about my Art Deco prints lately, so here’s a reminder that they’re still very much available.

Eight branding images might not sound like a huge number.

But for a new business, a well-planned set can go a long way.

A homepage image. Something for your About page. Photos of you actually working. Images for Facebook, LinkedIn, Google and the odd post when you’re fed up of using the same picture again.

That’s the idea behind my Win a Shoot competition.

It’s for independently funded businesses in Wirral or Liverpool that are in their first year of trading.

You don’t have to know how to pose for a photo shoot.

Most people don’t, and I wouldn’t expect you to.

I’ll guide you through where to stand, where to look and what to do, but I try to keep it relaxed rather than making everything feel staged.

We’ll talk, move around a bit and try things until it starts to feel natural.

The point isn’t to make you look like someone else.

It’s to create photographs that still look like you, just without the awkward “what am I supposed to do with my hands?” moment.

If you normally avoid having your photo taken, you’re not the only one.

One thing I always think about on a branding shoot is where the photographs are actually going to end up.

Because a nice portrait on its own doesn’t give you much of a website.

You need some wider shots. Photos of you working. A good headshot. Details that help tell people what the business does. Landscape images for banners and a few photographs with enough empty space for website text.

It’s about creating a useful little library rather than twenty versions of basically the same picture.

That then gives you images you can use across your website, social media, LinkedIn, Google profile and other marketing without everything starting to look repetitive.

If you’re planning a new website or yours is due an update, it’s worth thinking about the photography at the same time rather than leaving it until the end.

The best photo is the one you use

A business photograph has not done much for you if it stays hidden in a folder.

The useful ones are the photographs that end up on the website, LinkedIn profile, Google Business Profile, proposals and social media because they still feel right wherever they appear.

That is why I ask where the images will be used before the shoot. It helps me think about the crop, the background and how much space may be needed around the person.

The aim is not just to take a nice photograph. It is to create one that earns its keep.
