"Look at that beautiful umbilical cord! When a baby is born, anywhere from 25-60% of their blood supply remains in the placenta. Waiting to clamp the umbilical cord, even for just 30-60 seconds after birth, allows the placenta to pulse this extra blood to the baby. What does this mean for them? What are the benefits? This extra blood contains iron, mostly in the form of red blood cells. This grants babies up to an extra 6 months of precious iron stores and lowers their risk of anemia. Studies have also shown that having anemia early in life has been linked with later cognitive and motor delays. These delays do not seem to completely reverse with subsequent iron supplementation. For the maximum benefits, the ACOG recommends waiting the full 3 minutes to clamp/cut the cord! And don't worry birth partners, you still get your moment to shine!! Just a few minutes down the line. πŸ’“ " -Kristie Breakiron [Photo origin unknown - this was passed to us by a birth worker. If you know the photographer's name, please share so we can credit.]

Yes they are! Tell your pregnant friends how incredible they are!

A helpful reminder to anyone who needs it: Pregnant women are INCREDIBLE.

According to new research, women who are expecting are living at the edge of human endurance – on a level comparable to someone who’s completed the Tour de France.

Yep, scientists at Duke University in the US have discovered that women carrying babies are operating at the limit of what a human body can cope with, in a way that’s comparable to elite endurance sport.

The limit of what a body can deal with was investigated by analysing elite sporting events, including the Tour and a 3,000 mile run. The data showed that the maximum energy expenditure a body can cope with is 2.5 times the body's resting metabolic rate, or 4,000 calories a day for an average person.

When you’re pregnant, your energy use peaks at 2.2 times your resting metabolic rate.

TL; DR: There is a ceiling to the amount of energy that humans can plough through, and it’s pushed by pregnancy, as well as by crazy intense athletes.

Good news! Researchers claim kids who like to co-sleep with you are more likely to become confident, clever and secure adults.
