I thought it was probably time I reintroduced myself.
I’m Matt, a Professional Wedding Photographer, a BIPP Licentiate and, according to one of my favourite reviews, someone who “instantly felt like an old friend.”
Apparently, turning up and putting the kettle on helped too.
That probably sums up how I work quite well. I’m relaxed, I talk to people, I get involved when I need to and step back when I don’t. I take what I do seriously, but I don’t believe that means I have to be terribly serious while I’m doing it.
There may be the occasional bad dad joke.
I’ve been doing this long enough that using the camera, understanding the light and knowing how to get the shot is second nature. A huge part of my job is actually understanding people.
Most people aren’t particularly comfortable having their photograph taken.
I know how to talk to them, relax them and get natural expressions without making the whole thing feel like an awkward photoshoot.
I’m often told, “We don’t want posed photographs; we like yours because they don’t look posed.”
The difference is knowing how to set up a photograph without making the people in it look or feel like they’ve been set up.
I’m also a Licentiate member of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP). The BIPP has been supporting and qualifying professional photographers for well over a century, and membership isn't simply a case of paying a fee and adding some letters after your name.
My work has been assessed against professional standards, and as a member I work to the BIPP’s code of professional conduct. For clients, it’s an extra bit of reassurance that you’re putting your photographs, and often some pretty important moments, in a safe and qualified pair of hands.
Ultimately though, I’m still just me.
Professional, respectful of the occasion, happy to chat to your guests, put the kettle on and make people feel comfortable.
And take some darn good photographs while I’m there.
