Newborns change faster than any other subject I photograph.

By the time a baby is three months old, they are already very different from those first extraordinary days. The tiny curled fingers. The way they fit in the crook of an arm. The absolute miracle of something that small being a whole entire person.

Newborn sessions are ideally done within the first two weeks, while all of that newness is still at its most precious.

If you've recently welcomed someone new, or you know someone who has, please share this with them.

Those first weeks feel like they'll last forever, they don't.

Let's capture them properly. 💛

It was a real pleasure to spend time with Lauren, owner of All About Hair, for her branding shoot here at the studio.

Lauren has built something genuinely special and impressive. A salon with real warmth, a loyal following, and a personality that comes through in everything she does.

My job was simply to make sure that all came through in her images too.

Branding photography is one of those things that makes a real difference to how a business is perceived online. When the images feel authentic, when they actually look like you, people notice.
They trust you before they've even picked up the phone.

If you're a local business owner thinking about refreshing your brand imagery, I'd love to chat because REAL branding is more about YOU than you might think.

At the start of every session I try to find out a bit about the family.

Not just names although I always ask those. Sometimes I'll joke about forgetting but that's just ice breaking :-D

More like who they actually are. What the kids are into. Whether there's a grandparent visiting who's the reason they've booked. Whether someone in the group really doesn't want to be there.

It's got nothing to do with operating the camera, that part comes naturally to me now, the kit is an extension of my arm but the connection just changes how the whole thing goes.

If I know that little Johnny is rugby mad, I've got something to say to him when the posing gets uncomfortable.
If I know the mum's been dreading it because she hates having her photo taken, I can pay a bit more attention to her from the outset.

People look better and more natural in photos when they feel like they're with someone who's genuinely interested in them, when they're not thinking about being in a photograph.

That's what I'm trying to sort out first.

The rest is easy,
The rest is photography

You can find "Award Winning Photographers" anywhere these days, it's almost like theres an award for anything, especially if you "buy in" to the competition or get all your friends to vote for you.
But what about awards the actually matter. Awards that are the REAL prestigious awards to achieve?

A few years ago I was awarded Portrait Photographer of the Year for the South West.

I don't bring it up constantly, (ok a lot but not constantly :-D) because the work should speak for itself.
But I think it's worth saying once, clearly, because of what it actually means.

Photography awards through the The BIPP aren't decided by public vote or social media popularity. They're assessed by a panel of working professionals and qualified judges who know exactly what they're looking for.
Technical quality, composition, connection, lighting, the things that separate a properly created portrait from a "nice photo".

Winning that award mattered to me because it confirmed something I'd been working towards for a long time: that the standard I hold my work to is real, not self-declared.

When you book a session with me, you're not trusting my opinion of my own work. You're trusting the opinion of people who have spent careers knowing the difference.

The question I get asked more than any other, before a session:

"What if the kids don't cooperate?"

Here's my honest answer.
Kids who are told to stand still and smile don't cooperate.
Kids who are allowed to be themselves in a warm, interesting room with someone who isn't phased by them and actually enjoys a bit of nonsense chat with them, they're fine.
They're often brilliant.

The best images I've ever taken of children are not the ones where everyone sat still, although yeah, some of those are pretty fantastic. They're the ones where the three-year-old decided to become a horse halfway through, and the older brother is caught laughing at them, and the parents forgot for a moment that I was there.

I've been doing this since before many of my clients' children were born. I know how to read a room, how to stay calm when things go sideways, and how to find the photograph in the chaos.

Bring the kids as they are, let me capture the chaos that makes them. That's entirely the point.

A lot of photographers will give you digital files and call it done.

I don't work that way.

When your session is over I will invite you back to a reveal where we sit down together to go through your images. Not because I want to upsell you on something but because this is all part of the job.

Seeing your photographs for the first time is a moment. It deserves more than an email with a download link.

This reveal is where people who came in telling me they hate being photographed suddenly go very quiet.
Where parents see their kids in a way they haven't seen them before.
Where someone points at an image of themselves and says, slowly, "I actually really like that one."

The photograph, the framed print, the canvas is the product.
But the experience? From the moment you first walk in to the studio to the moment you leave happy, with your own personal framed art pieces...that is the passion.

Maternity portraits are some of my favourites to create.

Not because they're technically complex although getting the light right on a bump takes more thought than people might expect.
But because there's a quality to that particular moment that doesn't exist anywhere else. And this is something that most women will only experience once or twice in their lives

You're in between two versions of your life.
You can feel it, but you can't quite see it yet.
And in a few months, when everything has changed completely, you're going to want a photograph from this exact point.
Not to remember what you looked like, but to remember how it felt.

I've had clients tell me they almost didn't book a maternity session. Too self-conscious, too busy, too unsure whether it was really worth it and every single one of them has been glad they did.

If you're expecting, or you know someone who is and would love to have some gorgeous photographs that compliment the incredible stage of life that you are experiencing then give Matt Curtis Photography - LBIPP a call.

Sessions are relaxed, personal, and you are properly looked after from start to finish.

I learned to shoot on film. (It's a thing from last century and before)

This isn't a nostalgia thing, it's just that it's important because it shaped everything that came after.

When you're shooting on film, you have 12, 24 or 36 frames on a roll.
You can't check the back of the camera.
Every single shot has to count, because you won't know what you've got until the film is developed.

That demands a level of control, of precision, with light, with exposure, with the moment you choose to press the shutter. That doesn't come from trial and error. It comes from actually knowing what you're doing.

I still work that way.
Not because I'm stuck in the past, but because the discipline from those early years is why I don't miss things.
It's why I know before I fire the shutter that the photo is there.

Modern cameras are extraordinary but the skill behind using them is still the same thing it's always been: reading the light, reading the scene, reading the room, reading the people in front of you.
That part hasn't changed for me since I started working in photography in 1997.

There's a moment in almost every family session.

It's usually about ten minutes in, when everyone's stopped thinking about the camera. A parent says something funny to their youngest, the eldest does something ridiculous, someone laughs, we all laugh.

That's the photograph I'm waiting for.

I'm not interested in making you stand still and smile on command.
I'm interested in what your family actually looks like when you're just... yourselves.
That's what ends up on the wall.
That's what you'll still be looking at in twenty years.

If you've been thinking about getting a proper family portrait done, my diary has some availability this spring. The studio's warm, there's no pressure, and I'll make sure even the most reluctant member of the family (you know the one I mean :-D ) has a good time.

Message me or visit the link in bio to find out more.
