Built for life in the treetops! 🐨

Southern koalas spend much of their lives among the branches of eucalyptus trees, with specialised adaptations allowing them to survive on a diet that provides relatively little energy.

🐾 Species: Southern koala

🌍 Native Range: South-eastern Australia

🌳 Habitat: Eucalyptus forests and woodlands

🥗 Diet: Primarily eucalyptus leaves, selectively feeding on particular species and foliage

🦾 Adaptation: Koalas have strong limbs, sharp curved claws and opposable digits that help them grip and climb through trees. Their specialised digestive system also allows them to break down tough, fibrous eucalyptus leaves and extract as much nutrition as possible from their low-energy diet.

⚠️ Conservation Status: Vulnerable in parts of Australia, with conservation status varying between states and populations

It’s Caturday! 🦁

Lionesses are the backbone of a pride, working together to hunt, raise their cubs and defend their territory. Their strong social bonds make lions unique among the world’s big cats.

🐾 Species: African lion (Panthera leo)

🌍 Native Range: Primarily sub-Saharan Africa, with a small population of Asiatic lions surviving in India

🌾 Habitat: Savannas, grasslands, open woodlands and scrublands

🥗 Diet: Carnivorous, primarily hunting large herbivores such as zebra, wildebeest, antelope and buffalo

🦾 Adaptation: Lionesses are powerful, cooperative hunters, often working together to stalk and ambush prey. Their muscular bodies, retractable claws and keen night vision make them formidable predators, particularly in low-light conditions.

Bad hair day! 🐒

Young pileated gibbons are born with pale fur, giving youngsters a very different appearance from the darker adults they will eventually grow to resemble.

🌍 Native Range: Cambodia, Thailand and Laos

🌴 Habitat: Tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests

🥗 Diet: Primarily fruit, supplemented with leaves, flowers and small amounts of animal matter

🦾 Adaptation: Exceptionally long arms and strong hands allow pileated gibbons to travel through the canopy using brachiation, swinging from branch to branch while their highly mobile shoulder joints provide an impressive range of movement.

Four little meerkat pups! 🐾

Life outside the burrow is full of new sights, smells and experiences as young meerkats begin exploring their surroundings under the watchful eyes of the mob.

🌍 Native Range: Southern Africa, including Botswana, Namibia and South Africa

🏜️ Habitat: Arid and semi-arid grasslands, scrublands and desert regions

🦾 Adaptation: Meerkats are highly social animals, living in groups known as mobs where individuals work together to watch for danger and help care for young. Pups gradually learn important survival skills by observing and interacting with older members of the group.

It’s Sloth Sunday! 🦥

High in the rainforest canopy, two-toed sloths spend much of their lives hanging beneath the branches, perfectly adapted to a slow-paced life among the trees.

📓 FIELD NOTES

🐾 Species: Linne’s two-toed sloth

🌍 Native Range: Northern South America

🌳 Habitat: Tropical and subtropical rainforests

🥬 Diet: Primarily leaves, shoots, fruit and other plant material

⚠️ Conservation Status: Least Concern

⏳ Lifespan: Around 20 years in the wild, with individuals in managed care capable of living for 30 years or more

🌿 Notable Traits: Two-toed sloths are specially adapted for life suspended beneath branches, with long curved claws providing an exceptionally strong grip. Their slow metabolism helps them conserve energy, contributing to their famously unhurried lifestyle.

With its enormous red-orange bill and casque, the rufous hornbill is one of the most striking birds found in the forests of the Philippines.

🌍 Native Range: Endemic to the Philippines

🌳 Habitat: Tropical lowland and montane forests

🍈 Diet: Primarily fruit, supplemented with insects and small animals

🪶 Notable Traits: Rufous hornbills have an impressive bill topped by a large casque. Like other hornbills, they nest in tree cavities, with the female sealing herself inside during nesting while the male delivers food through a narrow opening.
