17 years ago this month, I set up Pennie Withers Photography.

Apparently, the traditional anniversary gift for 17 years is furniture.

Rather than use that as an excuse to buy a new sofa, it got me thinking about some of the more memorable spaces my camera has taken me over the years.

From wandering around an empty Royal Albert Hall and photographing from the organ loft at Westminster Abbey to my first shoot after lockdown and an official opening where creative control was very definitely not mine, there have been some memorable ones.

For this year’s anniversary blog, I’ve chosen four very different spaces and the stories behind why they have stayed with me.

17 years on, I still love the fact that I never quite know where my camera might take me next.

One unexpected advantage of being only 5ft 2" is that when I'm photographing properties, I can fit into some small spaces to get the shot I want.

Yesterday’s shoot for Mat from Chestnut Property involved sitting in a bath plus also squeezing into a corner behind a chest of drawers.

Property photography is often a bit like that. The best viewpoint isn’t necessarily the most comfortable or obvious one, and sometimes moving yourself just a foot or two can make all the difference to how a room looks.

It’s probably just as well nobody sees what’s going on behind the camera most of the time…

Here is the third and final photograph from my recent blog about why the pictures we treasure most are not always the technically perfect ones.

This one was taken in Portugal with my daughter and I love it because it feels completely natural.

Neither of us is looking at the camera, hair is blowing around and we are simply caught laughing.

It may not be a perfectly posed portrait, but it takes me straight back to that moment. And for me, that is what makes a photograph special.

Following on from my last post, this is the second of the three personal photographs I included in my latest blog about why the pictures we treasure most are not always the technically perfect ones.

This one was taken at Henley Festival and, by most conventional measures, it is far from perfect. It is busy, slightly chaotic and nobody has been carefully arranged.

But that is exactly why I love it.

It captures the fun, energy and atmosphere of the evening far better than a tidier photograph might have done.

Sometimes the best photos are simply the ones that take you straight back to how a moment felt.

It’s today, so it seems only right to acknowledge that photography isn’t just my job. It’s a pretty big part of my life too.

My family are very used to the fact that nothing goes un-photographed. Holidays, birthdays, dinners, days out... if there isn’t a photograph of it, as far as I’m concerned, it didn’t happen.

They may occasionally roll their eyes, but those photographs gradually become the record of our lives. Every year I turn them into a family yearbook, and I love looking back through them, being reminded of all the little moments we might otherwise have forgotten.

So, for World Photography Day, here’s one of all of us together this summer.

My latest blog is about why the photographs we treasure most are not always the technically perfect ones.

Sometimes it is the slightly chaotic, unplanned moments that stay with us because they capture exactly how something felt at the time.

In the blog, I have chosen 3 personal photographs to show what I mean. This is one of them.

It was taken during a wedding ceremony and what I love most is the completely spontaneous burst of laughter between the bride and groom.

For a moment, they have forgotten the camera is there, and that is what makes the photograph feel so alive. A perfectly posed portrait would certainly have looked lovely, but it would not have captured the same energy.

So if you're heading off on holiday this summer, don't be too quick to delete the imperfect photos. Years later, they may be the photographs that take you straight back!

The photographs we treasure most are not always the technically best ones.

They may be slightly blurred, oddly framed or full of distractions. But if they capture the laughter, energy and atmosphere of a moment, they can mean far more than a perfectly posed photograph.

In my latest blog, I have shared three personal photographs that instantly take me back to how those moments felt. It is this same energy and spontaneity I love to capture in my professional work too.

As many of us head off on holiday with family or friends this summer, perhaps it is worth thinking twice before deleting the imperfect ones.
