Eilean Donan castle sneaks up on you as you drive North up the A87, dreaming of the Isle of Skye, and it's misty vistas.

Lost in this reverie, and staring at the hills above Loch Duich, a sharp right corner reveals this defensive monolith, rising above the confluence of Loch Alsh, Loch Duich and Loch Long.

But this is no serene, fairy-tale castle, populated by princes and princesses, with never-ending feasts and dances.

This is a defensive stronghold, built to repel marauding Vikings and rival clan chiefs, all vying for control of the “Sea Kingdom” of the Lord of the Isles.
