Otley Camera Club We are a photography club for all abilities based in Otley. Join us every Thursday evening September to May for socials, tuition, competitions and speakers.

We also run a number of 'out and abouts' throughout the year catering for all interests.

🏆 PHOTO OF THE MONTH – AUGUST 🏆

A little late getting this out - sorry!

The winner of our July Photo of the Month competition was… Emily Waring! 👏📸

July's entries gave last month's winner, Richard Sells, a particularly difficult job, with some fantastic photographs to choose from. There were colourful Pride images, great landscapes, a wonderful storytelling wildlife image and even a striking car photograph.

But Emily’s analogue photograph stood out for Richard.

He loved the muted colours and wonderfully nostalgic feel, saying the image looked as though it could have been taken in the 1950s in Provence. It certainly has a timeless quality to it!

Congratulations, Emily — the chocolate will be handed over next week when the new season begins and the task of judging the August competition is over to you. 🍫👏

A NEW SEASON OF PHOTOGRAPHY STARTS THIS THURSDAY! 📸

After our summer break, Otley Camera Club is back — and we can't wait to get started!

Whether you're completely new to photography, an experienced photographer, or somewhere in between, there's something for everyone in our new season.

And it's not just about Thursday nights. Throughout the year, our members get together for informal photography trips, social days and opportunities to photograph a whole range of subjects and events.

You don't need to be an expert — just have a love of photography.

📸 LEARN BY DOING – AND GET OUT WITH YOUR CAMERA!

Photography is about more than just taking pictures — it’s about experimenting, trying new things and finding creative ways to make the most of your camera.

At Otley Camera Club, our programme includes a range of practical sessions where members can get hands-on, try new techniques and learn from each other in a relaxed and friendly environment.

We also have our ‘Out and Abouts’, where we head out together to photograph some fantastic places and events.

Plus more trips and activities to be organised, including a weekend trip.

It's a great way to put your photography into practice, discover new subjects, share ideas and enjoy getting out with other photographers.

And you don't need to be an expert — new members of all abilities are very welcome.

📸 A NEW SEASON. A FANTASTIC LINE-UP OF SPEAKERS.

Our new season at Otley Camera Club starts on Thursday 3 September – and we’ve got some brilliant photographers lined up to inspire us throughout the year.

From powerful portrait projects and stunning wildlife to light painting, architectural photography, smartphone photography, abstract work and filmmaking, there’s a fantastic variety of subjects to explore.

Each speaker brings their own style, experience and approach to photography, giving our members plenty of inspiration and ideas to take away and try themselves.

📸 Meet the Members – John Northover LRPS, CPAGB 📸

This week we meet John Northover LRPS, CPAGB who joined Otley Camera Club two & a half years ago after moving up north.

John is a fabulous photographer and his talent has certainly been recognised within the club, having been crowned Photographer of the Year for the last two years running! 🏆

John is always happy to share his knowledge with fellow members, particularly during our practical sessions, where he is often on hand to help and offer advice.

He has also shared his photography with the club as a speaker, delivering two excellent evenings for us over the past couple of years.

John's photography covers a wide range of subjects, from dramatic landscapes and night skies to wildlife, architecture, aviation and portraiture. The selection here gives just a small taste of his work.

We're really pleased to have John as part of Otley Camera Club.

📸 Meet the Member – Kay Roxby 📸

Kay joined Otley Camera Club three years ago after moving south from Scotland, and she's become a valued member of the club. While wildlife photography is a real passion, Kay is equally at home photographing fast-paced sporting action and beautiful landscapes.

She also enjoys using her photography to support the local community, most recently capturing some fantastic images for Otley Cricket Club.

One photograph will always stand out as her most memorable:

"The biking one is probably the most memorable photo I've ever taken. It was taken at the 2019 Fort William UCI World Cup and Finn Iles (who eventually came 4th) hit a rut and went over the bars right in front of me. It was taken at a focal length of 26mm on a crop sensor and the bike literally bounced right over my head – a very, very close call!"

From intimate wildlife portraits and dramatic puffin encounters to split-second sporting moments, Kay's gallery showcases both patience and perfect timing.

We're delighted to have Kay as part of Otley Camera Club.

📸 Meet the Members – Jeff Green 📸

A member of Otley Camera Club for around 10 years, Jeff Green has built an impressive and varied portfolio, but he is perhaps best known amongst members for his incredible ultra close-up macro photography. His stunning images reveal details that are normally invisible to the naked eye and never fail to impress.

Jeff's photography spans wildlife, nature, travel, monochrome and creative imagery, demonstrating both technical skill and a willingness to experiment across different genres.

Away from club nights, Jeff is always keen to support our community photography projects. Most recently, he has photographed Otley Carnival and Bingley Amateur Operatic Society's production of The Witches of Eastwick, helping us capture and share these fantastic local events.

Not content with being behind the camera, Jeff also stepped in front of it during our recent portrait evening, volunteering as a model for our beginners' group. Looking every bit the suave and sophisticated gentleman, he helped members develop their portrait photography skills in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Whether photographing wildlife, producing breathtaking macro images, or giving his time to help fellow members, Jeff is a valued and much-appreciated part of Otley Camera Club.

Wildlife Arts Festival - 23rd - 25th October 🎨

Join us at the Otley Common for three days full of wildlife-themed talks, music, workshops, art, poetry, and stalls (on the Saturday).

Friday 23rd October, 7.30pm (The Wesley Hall, Otley Common)

A new witty and informative talk from the popular TV personality and WFO patron. As part of our fifth wildlife arts festival, George will be speaking at Otley's exciting new community venue, the Common, followed by a Q&A. After consecutive careers in academia and media George shares his personal journey to discover the world of wildlife - big and especially small - and explains why even in light of the current climate and nature crisis, his passion for the natural world is as strong as ever.

🏆📸 Our members are collecting the accolades! 📸🏆

One of the greatest pleasures at Otley Camera Club is seeing our members' photography recognised beyond the club, and over the past couple of months they've been enjoying some fantastic success.

👏 Competition Secretary Danni Burgess has had an incredible run, with all three of her entries to the RSPB Saltholme Wildlife Photography Competition selected as winners. Her images will now be displayed in the entrance hub at the reserve. As if that wasn't enough, two of her photographs were also selected as runners-up in the Kirkstall Art Trail.

👏 Not to be outdone by his wife, our Chair Chris Burgess featured in Yorkshire Life magazine after being announced as a winner in the Rivers4Life Exhibition at the Dales Countryside Museum.

👏 And we're especially proud of our junior member, Oscar, whose fantastic photograph of a badger—captured during one of our club weekends away—was selected as a winner in the Ilkley Young Photographer Competition and displayed as part of the exhibition.

Congratulations to Danni, Chris and Oscar on these well-deserved achievements. It's wonderful to see the talent within our club recognised by organisations and competitions across Yorkshire.
