Growing Up in the Royal Burgh of Whithorn
The Memories of a Galloway Lad
By David McCreadie (Dabby - Dabhand)
Prologue
As I have grown older, I've often found myself looking back—not because I want to live in the past, but because those years helped shape the person I became.
I was lucky enough to grow up in the Royal Burgh of Whithorn, a small Town in the heart of Galloway where life was simple, neighbours were friends, and childhood was measured not by screens or social media, but by adventures, laughter and the freedom to roam.
The world has changed beyond recognition since those days. Children today have technology at their fingertips, yet I sometimes wonder if they've lost something we had in abundance—freedom.
This book isn't about famous people or extraordinary events. It's about ordinary life in an extraordinary place. It's about growing up in a close-knit community where everyone knew everyone else, where doors were rarely locked, and where the countryside became our playground.
These are my memories.
Some are funny.
Some are sad.
Some are simply moments that have stayed with me for near 60 years.
Together they tell the story of a boy who never realised, at the time, just how special his childhood really was.
