Penumbra Foundation is pleased to present North North South, the first New York City solo exhibition by Ayda Gragossian.

Exploring the tension between visibility and erasure, her documentary images capture quotidian details of Los Angeles's sprawl as experienced on foot rather than by car, revealing moments that ordinarily escape attention. Drawing on Gragossian’s book of the same title, published by GOST in 2025, the exhibition highlights her visual narrative approach through the intimate closeness of vertically oriented images of working-class spaces in a city characterised by polarities of glamour and squalor. A poetic sensibility marks her urban portraiture, tracing humanity through rhythms of light and space shaped by an unseen populace. Visit until 24 November:

In 'Tarrafal' published by GOST, João Pina draws upon his family history to tell the story of the Portuguese concentration camp at Tarrafal, Cape Verde which operated between 1936 and 1974. The visual history of the camp is told through the only known photographs taken inside the Tarrafal camp, combined with correspondence, archives, objects and Pina’s own contemporary photographs. ⁠

We are pleased to share a new Special Edition of 'Big Sky' by Adam Ferguson.

Adam Ferguson began photographing Australia’s interior in 2013 in an attempt to dispel sentimental and outdated narratives around the ‘Outback’—a place central to the identity and development of modern day Australia. His photographic survey, made over a 10-year period, depicts fading traditional events, shrinking small towns, Aboriginal connection to Country, the impacts of globalisation and the adversity of climate change to illustrate the complex realities of contemporary life in the ‘Outback’.

One of West Africa’s most prolific photographers, Sanlé Sory (b.1943, Burkina Faso) took more than a million portraits, over seven decades, showing the profound social and political changes in Burkina Faso.

Colour Years at The Photographers Gallery captures a lesser-known chapter of his career. His colour prints, meticulously restored from the negatives in his archive, will be on show, alongside Volta Jazz record covers featuring his portraits of the influential bands that flourished after Burkina Faso’s independence. It opens today!

Award winning photojournalist Carol Allen-Storey is presenting her new publication Defying the Myth, published by GOST, in The Photographers Gallery Cafe Bar this October.

She will be in conversation with Shoair Mavlian, director of The Photographers' Gallery, and the women featured in the book, exploring how we see disability - and whether storytelling can change how these lives are understood.

The talk will be followed by a Booksigning in the Bookshop.
