It forms a compact, well-branched shrub, typically reaching 75–100cm in height and spread. Its tidy, controlled shape makes it well suited to patio containers, small gardens, and the front of borders, as well as mixed planting schemes where a neat structure is needed. It holds its form well and generally needs little maintenance.

For the second time in the history of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the world’s leading horticultural charity has lifted its ban on gnomes, inviting celebrities to paint them to help raise funds for the next generation of gardeners.

Stars including Sir Brian May, Dame Mary Berry and Cate Blanchett have decorated gnomes which will be on display at the 2026 Show and are available to bid on from Friday 15th May in an online auction that runs until Sunday 24th May.
