Peak District Heather

With the need for continued road access restrictions around the New Forest following the A31 fire on 9 August, I decided that rather than adding to the traffic and congestion, I’d head north to the Peak District to catch one of my favourite seasons — the heather in full bloom.

Wow… oh wow. Was it worth it. 💜

The landscape was absolutely transformed, with vast swathes of purple heather stretching across the moors, creating some incredible opportunities for landscape photography.

Sometimes a change of plan leads to something even better than you expected. 📸

Last night in the New Forest, as the deep orange sun sank towards the horizon, a bank of high cloud rolled in from the south.

As the last sunlight caught the clouds beyond the horizon, they seemed to echo the purples and pinks of the heather-covered north-facing hillsides — a beautiful meeting of sky and landscape.

Despite the dry summer, the New Forest is still giving us some beautiful patches of bloom. It might not be quite as spectacular as in previous years, but there are still some lovely paths of purple heather to enjoy — especially when the evening light catches them just right.
