Atlantic puffins, though occasionally a little clumsy in their landings, are more often photographed and admired as impeccably turned-out birds, sporting their striking black-and-white plumage, colourful beaks, and vivid eye markings against the backdrop of flowering cliff tops.
Life on land, however, comes at a cost. While processing my photographs from Skomer Island in southwest Wales, I was surprised to discover just how many of these birds were carrying parasites and ticks around their beaks and eyes. Apparently, these unwelcome hitchhikers are shed once the puffins return to the sea in the coming months. Until then, many of these summer residents will have to endure a degree of discomfort that is largely hidden from the admiring eyes of visitors and photographers.
A reminder that even nature's most charismatic birds face challenges beyond the frame.
