20 Years Together

Marytna and Rafal’s Marriage Celebration. It takes dedication, strength, and love to stick together against the odds. Life and relationships aren’t always fun, but they involve hard work, rainy days and hairpin turns. Maybe too much cycling allegory, but I can’t help myself.

This one hits differently as Martyna and Rafał are my family. I witnessed their wedding 20 years ago.

We’ve been watching an 20-year old wedding video before the day. My mum and dad, were there too. I’ve been caught in the background, constantly toying with my brand-new DSLR camera, my first introduction to the digital photography world.

I had no idea what I was doing back then.

So what have I learned over the past 20 years, except technicalities and keeping my photos backed up safely?

* Read the room
* Learn people
* Frame the moment in time
* Tell the bigger-picture story out of just one day

And learn that family relationships, and not only, aren’t easy to hold on to because humans are complicated and keep letting you down. And I used to be angry for who they are. But how can I be mad when I know how hard, almost impossible, it is to change myself? To hopefully be a better person?

My nephew took a few photos. A few slides at the end are his. I gave him my camera for 10 minutes.

He’s 13; the way he read the room, people and framed the moment is impressive.

Sometimes I like going back to my early work, many years back, when photographing couples, weddings, and whatnot for a living was only an idea - a distant mirage - so I photographed friends for fun. That brief idea became my profession.

Photography became therapy, a getaway for the problems I couldn’t solve at the time. Looking back, I can see how my photography and editing style have changed, and how everything has changed.

And sometimes I’m maybe too harsh on my old photos. All those imperfections I see now in hindsight. I re-edited these the way I would today, because I thought they deserved it.

The morning was gloomy. Very gloomy on that day. Magdalena and Remigiusz. We drove in my 30-year-old, square Volvo brick up to Dukes Pass. It’s a very twisty road from Aberfoyle, and we almost got carsick. My lens fogged up, and I couldn’t focus properly. The sun came out later in the day so that we could wander in the forest a little longer. It was a good time.

Despite all the flaws I see now in my early days, it was a good journey. Fun. A little bit goofy. Humble beginnings: photographing all my friends. People come and go, days pass by, but the photos will stay.

I’m so lucky to have this kind of wedding in Scotland. Chloe and Stewart nailed their big wedding day.

Let’s start with the venue. Kelburn Estate is wonderful. An old, quirky Scottish Castle with great interiors and large windows that make the light spectacular. Every photographer’s dream. If you’re brave enough, you can visit the sauna and take a dip in the barrel filled with ice-cold water.

The wedding ceremony under a big, old tree, overwhelmed with emotions. Humans who can express them are the most beautiful to me. Living life to the full. And Scotland is full of open-hearted people.

So what’s making an almost perfect day? People will remember good food. Don’t need to be fancy, but fresh and tasty. Wedding guests will remember the great band and music. A loving family and good friends who contribute to the day. Everything else, like place, weather, is beneficial and only adds to the full picture story. Chloe and Stewart’s day was simple, but they focused on the things that mattered the most. Having fun.

And yes, a wedding is a live event, and no wedding is perfect. We are humans. Getting tired, overwhelmed with emotions. That’s okay. A wedding is a real life compressed into one of the most important days of life.

So yes. I’m lucky. It’s a real job to be a wedding photographer, and yet it isn’t. It’s not only taking the photos. It’s being a friend and giving everything I can on that one day. Because I know how important it is.

Let’s strip the world of all the colours
Expose our souls, just a little
For a glimpse of time
I imprison them in a little black box
In loving memory of the past day

Sometimes I write poetry. It mostly stays in my notebook.
Because showing vulnerability is the hardest thing. What we are so afraid of?

Jay and Aditi’s engagement day. My job for proposals in Glencoe is simple. To pick the right time, when some people are on the mountain path, some aren’t around yet. And let love shine through.

David and Holly got married yesterday.

Before the ceremony, David nervously checked the time on his watch, anxiously fixing his cuff links.

On their first date at the restaurant, right after Advocate’s Close entry, he was running late and Holly waited for 20 minutes.

On her wedding day, she arrived on time for the City Chambers ceremony.

Now, let’s have a freakin’ party tomorrow! 🎉🍻
