The Big Reveal 🎉✨

There is something undeniable about this exact second. The deep breath right before turning around, followed by total joy, tears, and gasps from the people who love you most.

While I’m a documentary photographer through and through (and usually focus purely on letting the day unfold without any direction) this is one of those rare moments where stepping back and giving a bride two minutes of space to do a quiet reveal with her favourite humans just works.

Whether it’s mum, dad, bridesmaids, or the groom’s side getting the first look, that wave of genuine emotion is 100% real.

Of course, a reveal isn’t for every bride (and that’s completely fine), but when it happens, the energy in the room is magic.

Pure, unfiltered, beautiful chaos 🎉

If there’s one moment of the wedding day where everyone completely forgets to hold back, it’s the confetti line. Eyes squeezed shut, handfuls of petals flying from every angle, and two people running the confetti gauntlet.

Sometimes I’m with the couple on a 35mm, others further away on a 85mm. But never at 1.4. This chaos deserves at least a 3.5! (Geek talk).

It’s photography 101 and for good reason. The reaction is nearly always better than the action. This is constantly on my mind during speeches.

Whether it’s a big laugh, a happy tear or just plain embarrassment, I’m all about getting the reaction to the speech. After all, it’s an emotional day. Even the cake is in tiers 😏

There’s a world of difference between a polite double-pat on the back and a proper, full-contact wedding hug. The kind where someone buries their head into your shoulder, lifts you off your feet, or squeezes so tight you can feel the sheer joy vibrating through them.

No posing, no rehearsed angles - just two people completely lost in the moment. Here are 15 of my absolute favorite, unfiltered squeezes. All in black & white.

Side note for the technical: This is a big reason why I shoot with totally silent cameras. Not a single click or beep to interrupt the moment. Yes, the gear isn’t everything, but in this case it matters 📷

Weddings on film 📷

For a handful of weddings this summer I brought along a film camera with me. Partly for fun, partly for a little experiment - How does an analogue approach work in a digital world?

I’ve been playing with film cameras for some personal work for a couple years, and it definitely a growing trend in weddings. I’m not sure yet if it’s another Insta trend or if people are genuinely wanting more of a nostalgic touch to their photos.

For a camera geek like me, I’ve enjoyed playing with different cameras and film stocks. The old troupe is annoyingly true, it has a ‘look’ that’s hard to replicate otherwise. When it hits right it’s amazing, but when you get a scan back that didn’t work out it’s heart breaking.

I’d love to hear any thoughts on what you think about it. Is it a nice addition to the gallery or a passing trend?
