Chasing the Light. 🔴
Sometimes the shot you envision doesn’t quite happen in camera, so you have to get creative.
For this portrait, I wanted to create a dramatic beam of light against the red backdrop, illuminating one side of the scene while keeping the opposite side of my face in shadow.
Getting the lighting balance right was the biggest challenge. I used a Godox light on my left as the main light source, with a very low-powered LED panel on my right to retain just a subtle amount of fill without losing the shadows.
I also enhanced the light beam slightly in Photoshop to give it that extra brightness. The Photoolex Zoom Light is only 10W, so it needed a little help to achieve the look I originally had in mind.
Final camera & lighting settings:
📷 Camera
• ISO: 100
• Shutter Speed: 1/100
• Aperture: f/8
💡 Lighting
• Godox flash: 1/64 power, positioned to my left.
• LED panel: Positioned to my right, dimmed very low to maintain the shadows.
• Photoolex Zoom Light: Used to create the beam of light on the backdrop, with a little enhancement in Photoshop.
Not every creative idea works perfectly in camera, and that’s part of the process. Sometimes it’s about adapting, experimenting and finding a way to bring the vision to life.
One photographer. Endless perspectives.
