Another astro shot today, this time from Llyn Tegid (or Bala Lake) which isn't too far from home to be able to go in the middle of the night!

It was during our last hot spell that lined up with no moon and I decided last minute to head out to see what I could capture. I hadn't seen many shots of this particular location and felt it was a risk but it paid off.

I knew Aran Fawddwy would make a nice backdrop to this scene but I also didn't want it to look too small. I also knew it would give me the perfect chance to use my new 35mm lens to help with this and to also make the Milky Way appear much better, just showing off the main part of the core.

It was a peaceful evening with lovely reflections on the lake and I just enjoyed being there.

The hot weather this year has been relentless and it hasn't made me fancy going out for much normal landscape photography but it has meant at least I've been able to get out for some astrophotography and I've been really enjoying it again, learning new techniques and finding another creative challenge.

This shot was back from a productive trip in May in Pembrokeshire. The weather wasn't quite as reliable as it is now but we had a few moments. On this particular night we had been at the Green Bridge of Wales (after failing the previous night with clouds) and we decided to carry on until the early hours and rushed over to Freshwater West and managed to get some shots before believe it or not the rain came.

This hut in the foreground is the seaweed drying hut and is a lovely little feature and the perfect foreground., All it required was careful lining up of the core of the Milky Way to make the shot.

I have plenty more shots to edit from the last few months, they take a little bit of attention to get the most of them so I'm even slower than usual but I'm happy with this one!

This week is also the perfect week for you to get out for astrophotography, the moon timings are almost perfect, a good weather forecast and there's even the peak of the Perseids for that little extra touch.

August is heather season in the Peak District! 📸 For a few short weeks, the sweeping moorlands and gritstone edges transform as purple blooms carpet the landscape.

A shot I had wanted for a while and I had never got it on any other visit despite I'm sure it being fairly common. That is of course a rainbow appearing in front of Aira Force. Luckily on my last visit there was plenty of spray and some lovely light peeking through to make the rainbow appear.

Back in April I was running a residential workshop in the Lake District and the first day was a relaxing start. We had just been at Surprise View and it looked pretty grim and flat but heading back down the road the clouds had become more moody so we made a quick stop at Ashness Jetty.

It had only just been rebuilt so it was lovely to get a shot of it while it was still so new and the vivid colours of it contrasted against the blues of the water and skies. A shot that would be so easy to walk past but I'm so glad we stopped.

I'll also be running my next workshop here in Autumn 2027 so I'm really looking forward to that as the autumn colours will be stunning I'm sure!
