The ability to recognize, create, and modify light is key to creating great images. I have always been fascinated and awed by the way light magically creates beauty from the mundane as well as the beautiful. I focus

on making that same kind of magic.

I am drawn to the simplicity created by form, shape, and particularly colour. I then make use of the digital darkroom to enhance the colours already in the image - adjusting contrast, saturation, and brightness - in order to bring the image to its fullest potential.

And now for something completely different...
Early in July Stephanie and I had the pleasure of taking a vacation to Germany. We stayed a few days in Frankfurt on the River Maine and got to see quite a bit of downtown.

One of our favourite places was the Stadel Art Museum. One of the best things to see there was a view of downtown Frankfurt from the observation deck of the museum. The skyscrapers there have earned it the nickname "Mainehatten".

While I'm not a huge fan of cell phone photos, the panorama feature is fun to use.

WENTWORTH FALLS

Just "down the road" from the ski hill in Wentworth Valley, NS is this lovely waterfall. It's not a large falls, perhaps 25 feet or so high, but it cascades beautifully over the rocks and widens as it does so to create a beautiful fan shape.

I made a number of images from various perspectives in an effort to capture its essence. This closeup of a middle portion remains my favourite.

It's only a short, easy walk from the highway, and it's worth it.

SUNFLOWERS
I decided to photograph this arrangement of sunflowers because I was intrigued by its strong verticality. I had never before seen a flower arrangement that felt so tall. My original intent was to crop the image to a tall, slender shape to intensify the feeling, but the warm tones that surrounded the blossoms complimented them so well they convinced me to leave them in place.

"Field of Seeds" - I was awake and up way too early on this morning in May - the sun was just peeking over the horizon. My neighbour had been practicing "No Mow May" and his back yard had been a mass of dandelions, now gone to seed and backlit by the low sunlight. I combined three images to create how I felt.

Point Valiant at Rest

I made this photograph when the Point Valiant and her sister tug docked on the Halifax waterfront a short walk from the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic - a long time ago now.

I never did anything with the image and it's lain dormant on my hard drive ever since. I would come across it occasionally and always thought that I should really give it some TLC. This time I did.

This image is from a simpler time when spending time on the waterfront was about reconnecting with the harbour and the ocean rather than restaurants and tourist attractions.

And the Music goes 'Round and 'Round - This bandstand is in the Halifax Public Gardens. Regular concerts are held there during the summer months. Its shape is similar to a carousel, so I thought it appropriate that the music should go "'round and 'round".

I was looking for some new images. I had been to Bear Cove a long time ago and remembered a craggy coastline and thought that a revisit was in order.
I didn't find the location I was looking for. Instead I came across a small bit of "beach" with fantastic rock formations. This is one of them...
