Today's bird is the common yellowthroat. This image was captured during an early morning fall walk in Battery Provincial Park, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Some patience was required as this bird flitted quickly from perch to perch, looking for insects to eat.โ  It was more easily heard than seen! ๐Ÿ‘‚โ

This North American warbler is most commonly found living in wet areas with dense, tangled vegetation. The birds winter in the Southern US, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.โ

Common yellowthroats are small, weighing only about 10 g. They are very vocal and like to forage in low brush, picking insects and larvae from foliage, bark, and branches.โ
โ
Fun facts:โ
๐Ÿ‘‰Male common yellowthroats have a distinctive black mask pattern on the head
๐Ÿ‘‰The oldest common yellowthroat on record lived to over 11 years old โ

A white-breasted nuthatch takes a break from foraging in a red pine in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This image was captured last winter. This year, I haven't seen any nuthatches close to home but they are around; I have recently heard their characteristic nasal calls in the Gaspereau valley. โœ”๏ธ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธโ
โ
โ This non-migratory songbird is resident in Southern Canada, the US, and Central Mexico.โ  Mature, deciduous forest is their preferred habitat. Common visitors to backyard feeders, they are often seen taking seeds and nuts into nearby trees for caching.โ
โ
Fun facts about white-breasted nuthatches:โ
๐Ÿ‘‰ They are bark foragers and usually feed upside-downโ , starting high up in a tree and moving down the trunk head first probing for foodโ
๐Ÿ‘‰ White-breasted nuthatch pairs are territorial year-round although join flocks of chickadees and titmice in winter to forage โ
๐Ÿ‘‰ The oldest white-breasted nuthatch on record lived to over 9 years oldโ

A song sparrow takes a break from foraging in an urban park.โ  This bird landed close by while I was on an early morning walk, โ and paused long enough to take a look while I captured this image.โ

Song sparrows are familiar North American birds often seen hopping on the ground or flitting quickly about low shrubs to forage. Insects and other invertebrates are preferred foods, supplemented with seeds and fruits.โ
โ
โ Fun facts about song sparrows:โ
๐Ÿ‘‰ They can be identified in flight by their distinctive tail-pumpingโ
๐Ÿ‘‰ The oldest song sparrow on record lived to over 11 years oldโ
