The long-awaited day finally arrived as we flew from Calgary to Prince Rupert, B.C., for an unforgettable adventure to witness grizzly bears emerging from hibernation and searching for their first spring meals.
After boarding a bright yellow catamaran, we spent seven hours exploring the breathtaking Khutzeymateen/K'tzim-a-deen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, Canada's first protected area established specifically for grizzly bears and their habitat.
Although the weather was cool and overcast, the scenery was spectacular. Rugged mountain peaks, old-growth rainforests, pristine estuaries, and untouched wilderness stretched as far as the eye could see.
The highlight of the day was watching two mother grizzlies and their cubs foraging along the shoreline for clams and crustaceans. Having only recently emerged from months of hibernation, they appeared lean but healthy and focused on replenishing their energy.
We also encountered curious seals resting on nearby islands and countless bald eagles soaring overhead and perched high in the trees. Seeing these magnificent animals thriving in their natural habitat was a truly humbling experience.
These images are just a small GLIMPSE of a remarkable day spent in one of Canada's most remote and protected wilderness areas. MORE POSTS AND REELS will be shared in the coming days.
