To continue on last night's claim that you can see the Northern lights at any time of the year from the Calgary area. This image of the Northern Lights was taken on June 23rd 2015 in Kananaskis Country. That is just 2 days after the Summer Solstice, the shortest night of the year! The Lights at our latitude are rarely as bright as you might see at higher latitudes, but we are able to enjoy them even when it is warm outside.

Ask anyone, they will tell you that the Northern Lights are visible Late September to mid March. While that is true for places like Alaska, Northern Canada, Iceland Norway or any other place you automatically think of when you think of seeing the Aurora. In Southern Alberta, you can see them any day of the year. I took this shot just North of Calgary on July 9th 2015.

I took this image of the Milky Way way back in late August of 2019 near Calgary. Once you have seen the it with your own eyes, you will always be able to make it out if the sky is dark enough. If you want to photograph it for yourself, the core becomes visible at our latitude in February, but you will have to get up really early as it will only be above the horizon between 3 and 5am. Over the course of the next 8 months, the time shifts so that by the beginning of October, the core is only visible from just after it gets dark till about 9:30. By the end of October, the core has sunk below the horizon in to the South in Canada, so you either have to take a trip down South or wait till February again.

I took this shot in Kananaskis Country of the Corona way back in February of 2023. You can see the most of the hues of the lights here. The Purples are less than 100km, green is between 100 and 240km and the reds are 240km or higher. That means that the only Northern lights that are not in outer space are the blues and purples!

We are in the season where getting to see/photograph the Northern Lights is available to people who just can't stay up late. I remember taking my mom out to see them a couple of years ago. It was early December and we went out on a promising night. The lights showed up. She enjoyed them and I had her back home by 10pm.
This shot was taken in K country.a few years back.

I saw several Mule Deer out at Glenbow Provincial Park while I was there. I thought that I was lucky to sneak up on a few of them....Now that I am a little wiser, I am guessing they let me get that close, because their sense of smell is estimated to be 1000 times greater than a human's, so unless I was down wind from all of the deer I saw, they knew I was coming when I was still about 3/4 of a kilometer from them, they just didn't see me as a threat.
