Sunrise at the Tessellated Pavement 🌅

The Tessellated Pavement is one of Tasmania's most unique coastal landscapes, but the real magic happens when the first light of day sweeps across the rock formations. Light creates depth, reveals texture, and turns a simple scene into something extraordinary.

Here are a few camera techniques I use to make the most of sunrise conditions:

📸 Use a tripod to keep your composition steady and allow for slower shutter speeds in low light.

📸 Shoot in manual mode to have full control over your exposure as the light changes rapidly.

📸 Keep your aperture between f/8 and f/16 for maximum sharpness throughout the scene.

📸 Use a low ISO (ISO 100-200) to maintain image quality and reduce noise.

📸 Try longer exposures to smooth moving water and create contrast against the geometric rock patterns.

📸 Focus about one-third into the scene or use focus stacking when you want sharpness from the foreground to the horizon.

📸 Watch the direction of light. Side light is often best for revealing the textures and details in the pavement.

The key is not just photographing the location—it's understanding how the light interacts with the landscape. The best images often come from patience, observation, and being ready when the light reaches its peak.

Early morning starts don't always feel worth it—until moments like this.

Sunrise at Cradle Mountain, with fog blanketing Dove Lake and the first light of the day illuminating the landscape. A perfect reminder that great light is often worth the early alarm.

🍂 Farewell Autumn, Welcome Winter ❄️

As autumn draws to a close and winter begins to settle over Tasmania, I'm sharing one of my final autumn images captured at the breathtaking Cradle Mountain.

For me, this photograph isn't just about the landscape—it's about the light.

Light is one of the most powerful tools in landscape photography. The same scene can look completely different depending on how light interacts with the land, the weather, and the season. In this image, the low autumn light cuts across the mountains, creating contrast, depth, and drama that simply wouldn't exist under flat midday sunlight.

📸 A few tips for creating dramatic landscape photographs using light:

✨ Chase the golden hours
The hour after sunrise and before sunset often produces softer, warmer light that adds mood and dimension to your images.

✨ Look for side lighting
Light coming from the side reveals textures, shapes, and details in mountains, forests, and rocks.

✨ Don't fear bad weather
Some of the most dramatic lighting happens before or after storms when sunlight breaks through clouds.

✨ Watch the shadows
Shadows add depth and help tell a story. A landscape without shadows can often appear flat.

✨ Be patient
The best light may only last a few seconds. Sometimes waiting is the most important skill a photographer can have.

As we move into winter, I'm looking forward to new conditions, changing moods, and fresh opportunities to capture Tasmania's wild beauty. Every season has its own story—it's all about finding the right light to tell it.

What role does light play in your photography or outdoor adventures? I'd love to hear your thoughts
