Kate j Baker - Photographs

Kate j Baker - Photographs Because everything is connected. I live and work in my home-based studio in Warburton, Victoria, Australia. The world becomes very still and yet timeless.

For the last 20 years I have been growing and developing my artistic practice with photography, primarily using old film cameras and handcrafting silver gelatin photographs in my darkroom and studio. This is a truly beautiful part of the world and I know I'm so fortunate to be here. Over time I have come to realise that my photographs are almost always about finding a way into connecting with and

expressing a feeling or an idea related to a feeling. I am particularly interested in that which connects us to that which is greater than us, both inner and outer. Feeling somewhat isolated and 'uncool' as a teenager I remember having the stark realisation one day that what we see on the surface in another person isn't necessarily the whole story and I started to really look, really pay attention and to wonder how others saw the world from their inside. This led to compassion, curiosity and a sense of liberation. From this space I began to use the lens (my eyes and later the camera) as a way of really looking into the world and into people, without imposing any expectations or judgement. In those moments I am transported beyond myself and feel like ether itself. My view is very open, I assume nothing, I simply seek to explore and witness, and this somehow opens a door.

Олександр Гончаренко (Oleksandr Honcharenko) is reviving the ancient Ukrainian tradition of Kobzars. As a traveling musician, a kobzar was/is a Ukrainian folk bard who performed songs, epics, and historical accounts to his own accompaniment, often on a kobza or lyre. as a symbol of Ukrainian identity, have Kobzari played a vital role in Ukrainian cultural heritage by preserving history, traditions, and national identity through their performances.
I can’t show my black and white film photographs until back in australia and developed but here’s Oleksandr (and thank you .efimov for photographing me photographing!) . With the extraordinary St Michael’s Cathedral in the background… Kyiv, Ukraine 1 October (Ukrainian Defenders Day, a National public day celebrating the defenders of Ukraine throughout its history).
