The sibling portraits are the ones families order largest. Every time.

Not the group shot with everyone looking, though we take that too. The one with just the children in it.

Brothers and sisters change how they are with each other every couple of years. Right now they will still stand close and put an arm around each other. That does not last, and it is worth having on a wall while it does.

If you have more than one child, ask me for these. I will always make time for them.

What should we wear? Easily the most common question I get, so here is the short version.

Pick two or three colours that sit near each other and build everyone around them. Soft neutrals, warm creams, muted greens and blues all photograph well in Perth light. Skip large logos and busy patterns, because they pull the eye away from faces.

Comfort matters more than people expect. If a dress is itchy or the shoes are new, your children will let us both know within ten minutes.

Send me a photo of what you are thinking beforehand and I will give you my honest opinion.

Father's Day tomorrow.

Have a scroll through the photos on your phone from the last year. My guess is there are hundreds of your children, a fair few of you with them, and almost none of their dad.

It is the same in most families I photograph. Dad is the one holding the camera, or the one who says he does not need to be in it.

So, a small suggestion for tomorrow. Hand your phone to someone. Get in the frame. Same goes for the step dads, grandfathers and father figures.

Your children will want to see him there one day.

First day of spring.

From here the evenings stretch out, the light turns golden a little later, and Perth goes green and gold all at once. It is my favourite stretch of the year to photograph families.

Spring weekends are booking now, and they tend to fill through September and October.

If you'd like one, send me a message and we'll find a date while there are still plenty to choose from.

The best sessions have a bit of chaos in them.

Someone runs off. Someone crawls in the opposite direction. Somebody usually needs a snack halfway through.

None of that is a problem. It's actually where the good frames come from, because that's the moment children stop performing and start being themselves.

Swipe through for a session that went exactly the way it should have.

Ten days until Father's Day.

If you're still deciding what to give him, consider something he can't buy for himself. An afternoon outdoors with his people, and portraits of the family he has built.

Beautifully packaged gift vouchers are available for purchase.

Send me a message and I'll take care of the rest.

"My children will never sit still for photos."

Good. I'm not going to ask them to.

Sessions run at your children's pace. We play, we walk, we stop for breaks, and I photograph what happens in between. The portraits you'll love most are almost never the ones where everyone is looking at me.

If the thought of a session makes you nervous on your kids' behalf, please don't let it stop you. Wriggly is completely fine here.

A quiet reminder for the parents scrolling past.

You belong in more of these photographs than you think you do, and one day your children will be very glad about it.

Every family session includes a little time for just the two of you. No children climbing, nobody cropped out at the edge. Ten minutes is all it takes.

Swipe through. The last frame is the one this family will print.

You will forget this. Everybody does.

Not the big things. Those stay. But the exact shape of their cheeks at this age, the way they held their hands, how small they looked in your arms. Those details fade far faster than anyone expects.

That is the whole reason I do this work, and it's why I'll always encourage you to print what we make together. A gallery on your phone gets scrolled past. A portrait on the wall gets seen every single day.

What should everyone wear? It's the question I'm asked most.

The short answer is that you don't need to buy anything new. Choose two or three colours that sit well together, keep patterns quiet, and dress for the weather so nobody is uncomfortable.

Soft neutrals, muted blues, sage and warm sand all photograph beautifully against Perth bushland and beaches.

Every family gets a simple styling guide before their session, so nobody is standing in front of the wardrobe the night before wondering.
