I was back in Sunny Hobart for another shoot with the incomparable In2Construction. The quality of designs and ex*****on of their projects is of the highest order. It’s such a pleasure to walk into a space and be so spoilt for visual opportunities.

Occasionally, you come across people who create masterful works of art. In this case, the artwork is the Morning Star, a wedding venue in Wistow.

Every nook has been considered with beautiful touches that create one of the most cohesive and charming venues I have ever had the good fortune to photograph.

In essence, photography for educational advertising needs to convey the school's values and show sharp and engaged children.

I believe I have such a high success rate when photographing kids because they can tell I’m genuinely interested in them, and I don’t demand that they perform.

I’ll set up in advance and get the kids arranged where they’ll need to be. Importantly, I’ll let them know that we can have several goes at each shot, so there is no real pressure.

Then we can get on with the important business of having a joyful exchange; I just happen to be busy taking photographs along the way…

Ultimately, a portraiture shoot needs to be enjoyable, or you’ll end up with photos of people who aren't enjoying themselves…

I’ve just put the finishing touches to a considerable body of photography for the kind folk at St Louis Nursing Homes. They are a family-run business in their eightieth year.

The brief was broad, including portraiture of the staff and residents, interior and exterior architecture, gardens, activities and services, and rounded it off with some pet photography.

The key staff were inspiring to see in action. They knew everyone by name, which room they were in, the names of their immediate family and most importantly, their health needs.

I was genuinely impressed. They have immaculate purpose-built facilities in great locations run by a caring team.

Photographing a car is up there with the most challenging subjects I have ever shot. Highly reflective, complex curves and a mix of materials from mirror-finished glass and chrome, through to matte black rubber tyres that seem to absorb all of the light.

I love the challenge of photographing a whole car, but shooting details feels like a reward in the process.

I am spoilt with the boldness of the design choices the manufacturers made, particularly when photographing classic and vintage cars. From the elegant to the outrageous.
