Something worth thinking about before your reception: how you are going to say hello to everyone.

A traditional receiving line for 150 guests takes about an hour, and it is an hour out of the middle of your reception. I have watched couples come out the other side having spoken to every person there for eleven seconds each and not really talked to anybody.

There are gentler ways to solve it. Some couples release the ceremony rows themselves, which turns it into a slow walk out instead of a queue. Some go table to table during dinner, which is unhurried and gets you a real sentence with each group. Some skip the formal version and trust they will catch people through the night.

Any of those works. The one that costs you is not deciding, because then it happens by accident during the part of the evening you were most looking forward to.

Most wedding photographers cap you at eight hours. I don’t.

When I say true full day coverage, I mean it. If your day starts at 6:30 in the morning with private vows and ends at 11 at night, I’m there for all of it. No clock, no conversation about overages, no stress about what you’re going to miss.

Your wedding day comes and goes in a blink. You should be living it, not watching the time.

When I photograph first responders, the fastest way to lose them is to try to make them look heroic.

I know that because I was one. Eight years in the Army National Guard infantry, then several years as a North Carolina State Trooper. Point a camera at somebody in that world and tell them to look tough, and what you get is a person doing an impression of themselves. Everybody can see it, including the people you are hoping to recruit.

What actually works is far more ordinary. Hands. Gear being checked for the fourth time. The quiet in a truck before a call. Two people who have worked together nine years not needing to say much.

That is what the job actually looks like, and it is what somebody considering the job needs to see. The heroic version is a poster. The ordinary version is a recruiting tool.

Nobody has to teach me what a shift looks like, which means I can spend the day watching for the real thing instead of asking somebody to perform it.

Golden hour is the best light of the day and it is often the worst time to photograph a two year old.

I say that as somebody who loves that light. The hour before sunset is when everything looks the way people imagine photographs are supposed to look. In a lot of houses it is also about thirty minutes before a meltdown and an hour past the last nap.

With small children the light is the second consideration. The first is when your kid is actually themselves. If that is nine in the morning, we shoot at nine in the morning and I will work with whatever the sky gives me. I would rather have real faces in ordinary light than perfect light on a child who is done.

So when I ask what time of day your kids are at their best, that is not small talk. It is the most useful thing you can tell me.

If you have been putting off a session because the timing felt impossible, that part is usually solvable.

That is becoming an unusual thing to be able to say, and it is a deliberate choice rather than an accident of scale. The edit is where a set of photographs turns into a look, and the look is most of why somebody hires one photographer instead of another. Handing that off means handing off the part that is actually mine.

Practically it means the color holds together from the getting-ready room all the way to the last dance. It means that when a moment needed a heavier hand or a lighter one, that call got made by the person who was standing there when it happened and remembers what it felt like.

It is slower. It is also why your gallery looks like one day instead of a thousand separate pictures.

On a full day of coverage you get approximately 1,000 edited images, and I have touched every one of them.

If it rains on your wedding day you are going to be fine, and I would rather say that now than during the week of.

Some of the best photographs I have taken happened under a sky everybody was apologizing about. Overcast light is soft and even and it is genuinely kinder to faces than hard sun. A little rain gives you umbrellas, reflections, a covered porch, a run between two buildings with somebody holding a jacket over your head. Those are pictures. They tend to be the ones that end up on the wall.

What actually matters is having the plan before the day, so nobody is deciding at eleven in the morning while a hundred people wait. Where does the ceremony move to. Who makes that call, and by when. Are there umbrellas in somebody's car.

Answer those three in advance and rain becomes weather instead of a crisis.

I have shot in plenty of it. Your day is not ruined, and I will not let it feel that way.

The most underused asset in most small companies is the people already on the payroll.

Businesses spend real money trying to sound trustworthy, and meanwhile the person who has run their shop for eleven years has never been on camera once. That person can explain in ninety seconds what the company does and why it is done that way, and it lands differently than anything written for them, because a customer can tell the difference between somebody who does the work and somebody describing it.

It is also the cheapest thing on any shoot day. No script, no set. Ask a good question and let them answer it.

Most crews have somebody who is far better on camera than anybody expects, including them. Usually nobody has ever asked.

If your company has people who know things worth knowing, that is worth a conversation.

The most common question I get before a family session is what everybody should wear, and most of the advice out there is about color.

Color matters a little. Comfort matters more.

Here is what actually happens. If the shirt itches, if the shoes are new, if a kid has been told six times not to get the dress dirty, I can see all of it on their faces. You cannot photograph your way around a family that is uncomfortable. The pictures come back stiff and nobody can quite say why.

So my honest advice is clothes everybody can move in, in colors that live in the same family, and then stop thinking about it. Let the kids sit in the grass. That is where the good ones happen anyway.

If it helps, send me a photo of what you are considering ahead of time and I will tell you straight. I would rather answer that in a text than have you worry about it for two weeks.

One of the first real decisions you will make about your wedding day is whether to do a first look, and there is no correct answer to it.

What a first look gets you is time. You see each other privately before the ceremony, usually somewhere quiet, and we get couple portraits and most of the wedding party done while everyone is still fresh. That buys back an hour on the other side, and that hour usually goes to cocktail hour with your own guests instead of standing in a field with me.

What waiting gets you is the aisle. That first sight of each other in front of everybody you love is a real thing, and some people would not trade it for any amount of schedule.

I have shot both and I do not push either one. What I will say is decide it early, because the whole day's timeline is built off that single choice, and moving it in the last month moves everything else with it.

Online galleries are convenient, and every gallery on earth is also somebody's business decision. Companies change, links expire, phones get lost. The photos most people lose are not the ones they never took. They are the ones they had.

What I would suggest is the full resolution download onto your computer, and then one copy somewhere that is not your computer. A cheap external drive or a cloud account is fine. It costs very little and it takes one evening.

I keep multiple copies of every wedding I shoot, because those files cannot be replaced and I treat them that way. Your set should be yours too, in your hands, not living only at an address somebody else controls.

Ten years from now that will have mattered more than which edit was in style the year you got married.
