Chatham Lighthouse was another favorite stop on our Cape Cod trip. This is Nauset Light’s sister, they were built as twins back in 1877. Due to relentless coastal erosion and age, two of the “Three Sisters” towers in Eastham had already been decommissioned and sold off in 1911. By 1923, the single remaining wooden tower was in very poor condition and too small to effectively meet the area's maritime navigation needs. They moved one of the Chatham sisters up to Eastham in 1923 to become Nauset Light, leaving this one pictured flying solo as the last of the pair.

Still active after all these years and the views are incredible. The whole area around here has seen so many shipwrecks over the years because of how treacherous the coast is. In 1952, during a brutal nor’easter, a tanker called the SS Pendleton literally broke in half offshore. A four-man Coast Guard crew took a tiny 36-foot lifeboat out into massive waves and zero visibility and rescued 32 survivors in what they still call the biggest small boat rescue in history. Just wild.

Standing there looking out at the ocean really hits different knowing all that history. Grateful we got to see both lighthouses, really cool. If you decide to take a walk on the adjacent beach, watch out for those jellyfish! 🪼😆

Stopped by Nauset Lighthouse while me and my love were in the Cape, it was incredible seeing such an old lighthouse and a beautiful piece of history. Did you know it started out as one of the twin lights down in Chatham back in 1877? They moved the whole thing up to Eastham in 1923 to replace the old “Three Sisters” lighthouses that used to stand nearby.

It’s been moved back from the edge of the cliff a couple times because the ocean keeps eating away at the land, so they had to haul it 300 feet inland in ‘96! And yes, if you’re wondering, it is the same lighthouse on the Cape Cod Potato Chips bag 😂

So cool seeing a piece of real history while we were out exploring. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip!

Moments like this reminds you why you started this hobby in the first place. I was able to witness five or six different families of geese enjoying the sun. New life, new journeys.

My… look how big they’ve gotten! 🐣

I captured this photo today of one of the young Canadian goslings in the area, taking some of its first wing flaps in the water.

These early practice sessions are essential as the young bird strengthens its flight muscles and coordinates its movements. An incredible moment of natural energy and determination! 🪿

It’s amazing how fast they’ve grown in just a few weeks! There are two pairs that I keep seeing, one pair has about 4 or 5 goslings, while the other pair have more than a dozen. I’m assuming some may have been picked up along the way. I’ve seen people mention the fact that when Canadian geese see goslings by themselves they let their parent instincts kick in, and they’ll raise them as their own.

It goes without saying this Pileated Woodpecker caught my eye (and ears) today.

Did you know? 🤔

These woodpeckers are the largest in North America (16–19 inches long, nearly the size of a crow). They chisel out massive rectangular holes in trees hunting for carpenter ants — their favorite food (these holes can be so deep they sometimes snap small trees in half!). Pairs mate for life and defend huge territories (often 150+ acres).
