My… look how big they’ve gotten! 🐣

I captured this photo today of one of the young Canadian goslings in the area, taking some of its first wing flaps in the water.

These early practice sessions are essential as the young bird strengthens its flight muscles and coordinates its movements. An incredible moment of natural energy and determination! 🪿

It’s amazing how fast they’ve grown in just a few weeks! There are two pairs that I keep seeing, one pair has about 4 or 5 goslings, while the other pair have more than a dozen. I’m assuming some may have been picked up along the way. I’ve seen people mention the fact that when Canadian geese see goslings by themselves they let their parent instincts kick in, and they’ll raise them as their own.

It goes without saying this Pileated Woodpecker caught my eye (and ears) today.

Did you know? 🤔

These woodpeckers are the largest in North America (16–19 inches long, nearly the size of a crow). They chisel out massive rectangular holes in trees hunting for carpenter ants — their favorite food (these holes can be so deep they sometimes snap small trees in half!). Pairs mate for life and defend huge territories (often 150+ acres).

Spotted a Spotted Sandpiper! Try saying that 5 times fast… 🤣

Spotted Sandpipers have one of the most unusual breeding systems in the bird world. Females are larger, more aggressive, arrive first on breeding grounds, defend territories, and often mate with multiple males. The males do most of the incubating and raising of the chicks!

Female Tree Swallows line nests with large amounts of feathers. Research shows that nests with more feathers cool down more slowly, helping chicks grow larger and stay healthier during chilly New England nights.

Their legs are so weak they rarely perch for long. They eat, drink, and bathe entirely on the wing by skimming over water surfaces. They return to northern breeding grounds (like NH/VT/MA) very early, sometimes weeks before insects are abundant. This risky strategy helps them secure prime nest cavities before other birds arrive. 🐣
