Around 11:20pm on June 7th Rochester firefighters were dispatched to Lyell Ave for a reported fire. Engine 3 reported seeing a header in the sky as backup calls started coming into dispatch. Engine 5 arrived to find heavy fire showing from the rear of a large warehouse and declared a working fire. Companies found fire in the rear of the property extending into a large one story warehouse filled with pallets. Crews immediately attacked the main body of fire as units began entering the warehouse. Companies were forced to switch to a defensive operation, using numerous ladder pipes, deck guns, and master streams as the flames took hold of the pallets and numerous trailers. The fire spread fast, consuming over half of the massive building within 20 minutes of crews arriving. It destroyed around 75% of the warehouse as the incident escalated to 5 alarms, requiring multiple mutual aid companies as command worked around water supply issues in the area. Three people were rescued from the structure during the fire's early moments. Crews made a good stop keeping the fire from entering and taking over an attached two-story brick structure that was also loaded with pallets. Firefighters would work well into the day on Monday to knockdown all remaining hotspots.
