High school sweethearts who found their way back to each other 10 years later. 🥹 Here’s a little sneak peek into Julia & Nils’ wedding weekend at Stout’s Island Lodge!

One of my favorite things about getting to know these two during our consultation was hearing how their story came full circle. They dated in high school, went their separate ways for college, lived their own lives, and somehow found their way back to each other years later. Same people at heart, just a little older, a little different, and getting to know each other all over again.

But what I loved even more was hearing what they wanted their wedding weekend to feel like. They described it almost like summer camp in the fall. An island, a beautiful setting, and all their favorite people together in one place.

When I asked what they wanted to remember about their wedding 20 years from now, it wasn’t just the big moments. It was the little things. Two friends who had never met, chatting in the corner. People laughing over cocktails. Everyone dancing, catching up, and just being together.

The kind of moments you might not even notice happening around you.

And I remember thinking, yes. THIS!

Because those are the photographs I love just as much as the beautiful portraits and all the thoughtfully planned details. The ones that remind you who was there, what it felt like, and all the little things happening in between.

A little sneak peek from Morgan & Alex’s wedding day because I couldn’t keep these to myself. 🥹🤍

Their story started with Morgan tutoring Alex in college, which eventually turned into dating their senior year. Fast forward six years, three of those spent doing long distance while Morgan completed her residency in Minneapolis and Alex lived in Appleton.

And then came one VERY full year. Finishing residency, moving back home, buying their first house, AND planning a wedding. Casual, right? 😂

But something Morgan said to me before their wedding really stuck with me. Through all the unknowns, the big careers, the dreams they were both chasing, they had always been each other’s rock. And after years of making long distance work, they were finally getting to be together full time, close to their family and friends. Which made this day feel that much more special.

One of the biggest things they wanted was to celebrate with their people. Not just have beautiful photos of the two of them, but photographs of everyone who helped make this chapter of their lives what it is.

Because as much as I love a good editorial portrait, it’s those little moments happening around the couple that always get me. The reactions. The hugs. The laughter. The people who mean the most to them.

And their wedding day was exactly that!

Not a dry eye during speeches —including me! So much love in one room, and they even managed to surprise their best man, Keshawn, with a celebration for his 30th birthday. 🥹

It was such a good reminder that a wedding isn’t just about two people getting married. It’s about all the people and moments that brought them there, too.

Morgan & Alex, what a freaking year you’ve had. And what a way to celebrate everything you’ve built together.

I photograph weddings because I really love what photographs give back.

I think that’s probably the simplest way I can explain it.

I’ve always loved old photographs. Even as a teenager, I could sit and look through my dad’s stacks of pictures and get completely lost in them. There was just something about holding a photograph and knowing that this exact moment happened.

Someone was here.
They were laughing.
They were young.
They were together.
And now you get to remember it.

That’s still what I love about photography. Yes, I love making the beautiful images. I love the editorial portraits and the details and all the pretty stuff.

But give me the moments in between.
Your dad tearing up when he sees you.
Your friends laughing at something that had nothing to do with the camera.
The hug that happens in the hallway.
The way you look at each other when you don’t realize I’m taking a picture.
Everyone singing way too loudly on the dance floor.

The little pieces of the day that you probably won’t even realize I photographed until you get your gallery. Those are the photographs that get me. Because I don’t just want you to look at your wedding photos and think, those are beautiful.

I want you to look at them years from now and think, “Oh my gosh. I remember this.”!

That’s the whole thing for me. I’m photographing for the version of you who looks back 10, 20, 30 years from now.

For the kids and grandkids who weren’t even there. For the moments you didn’t know you’d want to remember. I don’t know which photograph is going to become that photograph for you.

So I want to pay attention to all of it. That’s why I do this. And honestly, I can’t think of much I’d rather be doing.

You’re going to forget more of your wedding day than you think…

Your nervous system will be so full, so overwhelmed with love and people and noise, that the details start to blur before you even cut the cake.

You won’t remember the way the light hit your veil during the ceremony. You won’t remember the exact look on his face when the you saw each other for the first look. You won’t remember who was crying in the third row, or the way your mom held your hand right before you walked out.

That’s just what happens when you’re fully present inside the biggest moment of your life.

That’s exactly why I do what I do. My job is to give you back the moments you were too overwhelmed with joy to hold onto yourself.

So ten years from now, you open your gallery and you’re back in that room. You feel it all over again.

If I had to describe my work in a few words:

Nostalgic
Emotional
Editorial

I think those three pretty much sum it up.

I’ve always loved photographs that make you feel something. The ones that take you back to a specific moment, even years later.

I love creating the beautiful, editorial images too. The ones that feel a little fashion-forward and elevated. But I never want the pretty photo to come at the expense of the story.

Give me the happy tears.
The weird little in-between moments.
The way you look at each other when you forget I’m there.
The people in the background.
The chaos.
The moments that weren’t necessarily planned but somehow end up being your favorites.

I want your gallery to feel like you, not like a collection of poses you found on Pinterest.

I’ll let my couples say it better than I ever could 🤍

What matters most to me isn’t just how the photos look, but how my couples feel throughout the experience.

Comfortable enough to be themselves.

Confident enough to trust my creative direction.

Calm enough to actually enjoy their wedding day.

And cared for enough to know they’re not navigating it all alone.

One of my recent couples said:

“Xee was truly in her natural habitat that day and ran our wedding like a boss! She wasn’t just our photographer, she helped keep us on schedule, reminded us where we needed to be and what we needed to do, and made sure everything kept moving smoothly.”

And honestly? This is exactly what I want my role to be.

Yes, I’m there to create the editorial, emotional, storytelling photographs you’ll treasure. But I’m also there to notice the little things.

To give you direction when you need it.

To keep the train moving when the day gets chaotic.

To create an environment where you can relax, be yourselves, and actually experience your wedding instead of constantly thinking about being photographed.

Because when you trust your photographer, something shifts. You stop worrying about whether you’re “doing it right.”

You start living.

And that’s when the real magic happens!
