Serious question, and we’re not selling anything with this one.

When is the last time you saw a photograph of yourself and liked it?

Not tolerated it. Not “it’s fine, you can’t really see my arms.” Liked it.

We ask because the answers we get are genuinely sad. A lot of women say high school. A lot say their wedding, which was years ago and which they mostly remember as stressful. Some can’t name one.

Meanwhile you have thousands of photos of everyone you love.

No CTA on this one. We just think about it a lot and wanted to ask.

From the makeup chair: what we hear while we’re doing your face. 💄

This is Carolyn’s hour. Nobody has a camera out yet. You’re sitting still for the first time all week with nothing to do but talk, and so you talk.

What comes out is almost never about photos. It’s about the divorce. The promotion. The year you just survived. The thing you haven’t told anyone. Why today, specifically.

Something about a mirror, good lighting and someone gently working on your eyeliner undoes people.

By the time you stand up, you’re not just ready to be photographed. You’ve usually figured out why you came.

The makeup is honestly secondary. 🤍

Your session, by the numbers. 🔢

2 people in the room once shooting starts.
0 experience required.
1 nervous breakdown in the parking lot, standard.
4 outfits is the sweet spot. More than six and you run out of day.
60ish minutes of hair and makeup before anyone picks up a camera.
100% of your images stay private unless you say otherwise.
12 minutes of awkward. Then you’re too busy feeling incredible to notice.
1 reveal appointment where you see everything properly.
0 photos you’ve ever had that will compare.

How one image gets made, start to finish. No feelings, just mechanics. 📸

The light goes up first. One main source, placed and shaped before you’re in the room. Everything else in the frame is built around where that light falls.

The pose is built from the feet up. Weight on the back foot. Hips angled away from the lens. Shoulders back toward it. That twist is what creates the line everyone recognizes as a “good pose.”

Hands get placed last and get the most direction. They’re the hardest thing in any portrait and the fastest way to make an image look tense.

Then the breath. Exhale drops the shoulders. Shoulders drop and the whole frame relaxes.

Then about eight frames, with small adjustments between each one, until it’s right.

That’s it. That’s the magic. It’s just a lot of small decisions made quickly by someone who has made them ten thousand times.

Save this if you’ve ever wondered what’s actually happening on the other side of the camera.

Bo***ir is not for everyone, and we’d rather say so than take your money.

Don’t book if you’re doing it because someone is pressuring you. We can tell within an hour and it shows in every frame.

Don’t book if you need the photos by next week. The timeline doesn’t bend and rushing it ruins it.

Don’t book if what you actually want is a quick cheap set of photos. That exists. It isn’t us, and we’ll happily tell you so on a consult.

Do book if you’re curious, a little scared, and tired of waiting. That’s the whole qualification.

Which one are you? Be honest.

Unpopular opinion: most bo***ir photography on the internet is edited into oblivion, and it’s making women more insecure, not less.

You scroll past these images and think “I could never look like that.” Correct. Neither could she. The waist was narrowed. The skin was smoothed into plastic. The thigh was pulled in.

So now you’re comparing your actual body to a body that doesn’t exist, and concluding you’re not ready for bo***ir.

The whole point of this is supposed to be seeing yourself clearly, maybe for the first time, in good light and a good pose. If we hand you back a photograph of a stranger, we’ve failed, no matter how pretty it is.

Good posing and good lighting are not the same thing as a liquify tool. One shows you what’s there. The other covers it up.

Agree or disagree? Genuinely curious where people land on this.

I can tell how your session will go within about four minutes, and it has nothing to do with how you look.

It’s whether you put your bag down.

Women who are still holding it, still standing near the door, still with their coat on, those are the ones who need another twenty minutes before I pick up a camera. So I give them twenty minutes.

The other tell is apologizing. “Sorry, I’m so awkward.” “Sorry, is this okay?” The apologies stop somewhere in the second outfit and that’s when the real pictures start.

I’ve been doing this since 2013 and I’ve stopped trying to speed that part up. It takes what it takes. My whole job before the camera comes out is just making the room feel like somewhere you’d put your bag down.

What’s your tell when you’re nervous? Mine is talking too fast.

Lingerie gets all the attention but details are what make the photo. 💍

Things worth bringing that most women don’t think about:

Heels. Even if they never appear in frame. They change your posture, your calves, and the whole line of your body. Physics, not vanity. And if you don’t own a pair, or own one pair you’ve hated since 2019, don’t go buy something. Ask us about our Red Bottom Shoe Closet upgrade and wear ours for your session. 👠

A robe or kimono. Movement is your best friend. Fabric that catches air photographs beautifully and gives you something to do with your hands.

Your rings. Especially wedding and engagement rings. Hands end up in more frames than you’d expect.

Something personal. His dress shirt. A jersey. The jacket you wore the night you met. These make images that mean something ten years from now.

Your perfume. No, the camera can’t smell it. You’ll stand differently anyway. 😌
