East Bay Images Photography-Butch Lombardi East Bay Images Photography is the name I chose for my photography business. It's representative of the area I live in-The East Bay of Rhode Island.

A lot of my photography originates here but I also travel throughout New England and beyond. I started this page so I could showcase all of my photography. While I shoot extensively in New England I do get out of the area. Because the sites I frequent are restricted to photos related to New England I needed a place where I can put up everything I shoot. While they are on my website and Fine Art America, I wanted more lattitude here on facebook and this page will afford me that.

I said it before, there's always a white whale when I go out to shoot. The Indigo Bunting is one. I was walking a trail when Merlin picked up an Indigo Bunting. I started to listen and sure enough there was one singing-and another answering. One was in a thicket, which was possibly a nest. The male landed in a tree and then came down to some lower bushes before he flew off. I managed a few shots in difficult lighting. Indigo buntings are actually black. "Indigo Buntings have no blue pigment; they are actually black, but the diffraction of light through the structure of the feathers makes them appear blue". Also got a Wood Thrush and a Willow Flycatcher.

We went to our grandson's baseball game earlier in the week. It was a warm day so I said to Cyndy, let's stop at a preserve near the field. The preserve had a lot of tall pines. I figured there would be migrating birds in the pines and along the pond. We walked about 10 minutes when we heard a pine warbler. I was able to get a few pictures before we headed over to the ball field.

Whenever I head out into the wood with a camera there are certain birds that I have in mind...Holy grails for photographers. Scarlet Tanager is one. More brilliant and striking than the Cardinal, they move through out area during mid-May. the best chances to see one is during the great Warbler (songbird) migration going on right now. What makes these birds difficult to photograph is their feeding habits-they feed mostly in the upper canopy. This is why, if you get a chance at photographing one, it's usually from below. That angle tends to miss the striking contrast between the scarlet and the black. I got lucky as this male was on a low tree at eye level. I also saw the female, but she remained in the upper canopy and I couldn't get a good shot of her.

Unexpected close encounter. I had gone out looking for warblers in the early morning. On my way home I decided to stop at the Audubon EEC in Bristol. Rare bird alerts on EBird were reporting an American Bittern in the marsh near the Audubon center. On my way down to the boardwalk, I ran into a young couple who had just started birding. We were talking about osprey when a large bird landed on the boardwalk near the osprey nest in the tree. The bird was around a curve so I couldn't ID it. My initial guess was a hawk. I told the couple to stay still, and I walked to where I could get a look without spooking it. I was stunned when I saw it was the Bittern that was being reported. He started walking down the boardwalk and we followed at a distance letting the bird go where it wanted. Meanwhile I kept walkers from charging down the boardwalk and spooking it. After walking to where the purple martin house is on the boardwalk he slipped through the bars on the boardwalk and stood in the phragmites, doing a typical bittern pose-blending into the background. We left him to his hunting I've spent a lot of time over the years looking for rare birds that were reported on E-bird. I've never had one drop out of the sky onto a boardwalk and then go for a walk with me

Still in the midst of the great warbler migration, in addition to many other birds also moving through our area this time of year. I managed to catch this Yellow throated Vireo yesterday.

We are in the midst of the great warbler migration. The next few weeks will be the only time you'll get to see migrating birds that pass through on their spring migration. Some will nest in our neck of the woods and some will move on to as far north as the Arctic Tundra. This is a Red-eyed Vireo. Unlike the white-eyed vireo. Te red iris only shows up in the right lighting conditions. If you see them in the wild you probably won't see the olive color as they appear dark when their moving.

Part of the bonding process for osprey is the male bringing the female a fish. It's like a show of prowess-that he can provide for a family. This is a bonded pair on a platform I built along with Russ R. It was a rebuild of an older platform that we repurposed up river to replace one that ice had taken out. There was an interesting dynamic here because 2 other males were trying to win the favor of this fair damsel. I spent at least an hour watching all the aerial acrobatics. In the end she stuck with her man (he brought her a golden fish after all) ! .... although that could all change tomorrow.

The bottom picture is from last night's sunset. In the lower right you can see the beautiful Ketch Sailboat that has appeared in some of my sunset pictures, aground on the opposite shore. She has been on her mooring all winter. With the winter we had it was precarious spot to be in. Winter storms finally got the best of her and she now aground across the river. I hope she can be salvaged.
