What was the goal?

A film session with off camera flash, testing new equipment, and showing a power couple.

A good spot, good light, and a roll of film. Only one thing left to do:

Have someone to take photos for!

Why choose film when digital is objectively better?

Because you get 4x6 prints and the negatives with the digital images.

Here’s why: I remember looking through old photos as a kid (sometimes kept in an old shoebox). There were hundreds.

It was awesome to go through them, flipping through and seeing pictures of my parents as kids, or their wedding, or of my brother, sisters, and me as young kids.

It’s having the pictures without the distraction of everything else on a phone screen.

You know what’s awesome about photography?

How creative we can be with it. Portraits are a moment in time, and the big ones are worth preserving.

Are you a pilot? I am too (although I’m not in the big leagues). My biggest regret? Not getting good photos of my first solo. Don’t get me wrong, my CFI took a bunch. But knowing what could have been chips away at me.

From the first solo to the last flight before retirement, there are so many huge wins that pilots achieve.

What’s this thing?

A great tool for portraits, especially when using flash.

It’s a light meter, and helps ensure the correct exposure off the rip.

Set up the light and dial in the settings, pop off a test flash to make sure the output is correct and we’re good to go.

It means less time setting up and more time getting portraits you’ll love.

Good photographs are made from good composition and playing with light.

What to wear for your portraits?

It depends (what a terrible answer 😂)

But it really does. Outfits are incredibly visual things, and can quickly become the focal point of a photograph.

Styles go in and out of fashion too. Do you want your clothes to date the photograph?

Accessories can make or break an outfit, tying everything together or going over the top.

I think the only time there is a wrong answer is when it doesn’t feel right to you.

Some suggestions I usually give:

For couples don’t match. Use complementary colors across outfits, a little more muted to keep from being distracting.

For a single person getting a portrait, get creative. The portrait shows your personality, and your clothes and accessories can help do that. A reserved corporate headshot can add a little personality with a unique tie or lapel pin. A simple watch can offset a crazy shirt.

Either way, these are things I like to have a general idea about as a photographer. It helps me steer a photo session and take advantage of a little spontaneity that may arrive.

Film or digital? What’s the difference?

You get amazing photographs either way. Honestly, digital is easier. It’s faster. It’s cheaper.

BUT

Film feels different. Color, grain, and a different approach make film a more emotionally charged medium.

The way a film session flows is a bit different. It’s a little slower. It’s a little more intentional. It may feel less candid and more posed to get the photographs you really want. We only have 36 pictures in a roll to capture what you want. It’s a little more expensive, but

Digital makes it easier to get a little more fast paced. A little random. It can be candid or posed. We can experiment with lighting, poses, and motion blur (just to name a few). The only limit is time and what the SD card can hold.
