A home was never meant to be run by a single pair of hands, and as I recently captured a mother just days postpartum with a newborn requiring round-the-clock care, the glaring lack of support for mothers came into sharp focus. Yet, witnessing how partners are stepping up offers profound hope; during our session, while she needed a quiet moment of peace to nurse and to gather herself, her partner seamlessly engaged their toddler without a second thought. To a new mother, that quiet space is everything.
If you haven’t educated yourself on the tenth trimester and postpartum, please do so; postpartum recovery can last for years, while for others it is shorter, and a mother’s mental health requires intentional care. Our plates are entirely full, so don’t wait to be asked or told what to do. Remember, if your hands and feet aren’t moving to help, she isn’t being harsh when she directs you, she simply needs you to step up for her mental health and share the weight.
For the partners who have shown up with unwavering consistency this year, please know that your quiet sacrifices and efforts to lighten the load do not go unnoticed, our intuition sees it all, and how you respond to her needs speaks volumes about your character.
Fun little tip you can start implementing today is your wife/partner is breastfeeding: my husband brings me a glass of water every single time he sees me sitting down and night time, mostly because I never actually sit, and because supporting our youngest through breastfeeding means he wants to make sure I stay constantly hydrated!
This sweet gesture, I promise you, will go a long way.
