At the end of Shelbey’s Fresh-48 session, she sat down with baby Hazel to have some soup. Everyone else boppin' about the house, in their own worlds. She sat and one by one each family member gathered around her. Cherished.

There's a jumping spider that lives near our mudroom.

Yesterday he sat on our patio table across from me while I was reading in the sun. I just looked up and there he was, staring at me.

This morning as I was throwing a load of clothes into the washing machine I noticed him on the inside of the mudroom window, right by the machine. Keeping me company.

He's often passing over the mudroom door as we make our way outside. It's the door we use most and we always wave bye to him.

There were also two jumping spiders who made a home in the basket where we keep some of the kids books. I'm extra careful when putting the books away now, because I would hate to squish them. They make their way around the playroom and I'm always relieved to see they've survived to see another day.

I don't have any photos of these spiders but here are a couple of film photos from a time we found a ladybug.

I try to be a good friend. To listen closely, remember the small things people tell me. I’ve always had the kind of memory that holds on to strange details, so that part comes naturally. I like small gifts, the unexpected kind. Gestures that say, “I was thinking of you”.

I try to be the kind of friend I would want for myself. When I photograph other mothers, it’s an extension of that.

My hope is to give mothers space to share their story. To show me the life they’ve built, the ordinary parts that mean everything. And to honor it when I create photos with them. To hand those images back and hope they feel something true in them.

I think that’s what I’ve always been trying to do with a gift, a gesture or a remembered detail. Let someone know they matter.

The most meaningful gifts aren’t the expensive ones or the ones pulled straight from a list. They’re the ones that make you feel like someone was really paying attention. Like you were known. Like you were cared for. Like a home-cooked meal delivered to your door.

I think it’s the same with the photos I take. The photos mothers hold onto likely won't be the perfectly posed ones, wth everyone smiling and every hair in its place but rather the photos that make them feel seen.

Considered, taken care of, respected. What if the photos I took could help a mother feel all of that?

I’ve been intentionally resisting the urge to rush or control my way through sessions. Allowing space for things to unfold without my input. Allowing what I might perceive as awkward to exist rather than stepping in to “fix” it.

Because just on the other side of that, when things settle naturally, is when it gets real. If I were to step in and change or control it, I’d be missing out on the truth.

It’s an ebb and flow. When I stop to observe and become someone living the experience with the families I photograph, then I can be inspired by their unique lives and personalities. Once I become an insider, then we can get creative and collaborate, because then we’re in it and trusting the process together. What a gift.

It takes a bit of trust, but I think the most trust it takes is trusting myself and the work I do. Trusting that I am where I am meant to be.

Also, sharing a meal together definitely helps.

What does it mean to be a mother?

The first thought that came to mind was “sought after.”

As soon as my children open their eyes in the morning, they find me in my bed.

I cannot sit down without them crawling on top of me. I never use the toilet alone, and I often hear “MAMA!” from across the house.

Cherished could be a better way to put it. Needed, even.

I knew that doing the belly stickers during Shelbey’s maternity session would be fun, a good activity for the kids to be included in.

But what I saw when we actually did it was how cherished she was by them.
