Last week, I hiked Mount Pilchuck before sunrise, knowing the morning would likely be cloudy and foggy. Still, there was a small glimmer of hope that the clouds might break and reveal some spectacular color and light over the mountains. That moment never came. Instead, the fog grew thicker as I climbed higher, eventually surrounding the summit and the historic fire lookout.

This video follows the trail to the lookout and explores the small museum preserved inside, sharing a glimpse into the history of the people who built and maintained this remote mountain station. 🏔

You never know what the mountains will give you. Sometimes it's a sunrise. Sometimes it's fog. ☀️💨🌬⛅️

My first time growing Lilium superbum, the Turk’s cap lily, and I have to say — I am thoroughly impressed. These flowers are absolutely stunning. The blooms open with a deep burgundy-maroon base that fades into golden yellow along the outer petals, covered in beautiful dark spots. The long, elegant stamens stretching out from the center add another layer of character and make these lilies look almost otherworldly.

These are just the first few blooms opening, and already they’ve exceeded my expectations. With many more buds still waiting to open, the plant should put on an incredible display over the next week.

Perched at 5,234 feet, the Mount Pilchuck Fire Lookout is more than just a destination—it's a living piece of Pacific Northwest history. Inside, historic photographs and displays tell the story of the lookout's early days, the people who staffed it, and the efforts that preserved it long after its fire detection duties came to an end.

Today, it feels like a small museum above the clouds, honoring the generations of fire lookouts who once watched these forests and the volunteers, including members of the Mountaineers, who have helped care for this special place over the years.

The fog may have hidden the surrounding peaks that morning, but it somehow felt fitting. It added to the quiet atmosphere inside the lookout, where the history of the mountain takes center stage.

One of my favorite things about hiking in the mountains is that you never really know what you're going to get, even in the middle of summer. The weather is unpredictable, constantly changing, and sometimes transforms the landscape in a matter of minutes. A clear morning can give way to thick fog. Gray skies can suddenly open to blue. Rain showers come and go, and sunlight finds its way through when you least expect it.

Such is life in the mountains. 🥾🏔🥾🌲

I set out before dawn with hopes of capturing the sunrise from the Mount Pilchuck fire lookout. As the climb continued, though, it became clear the mountain had different plans for the weather. The marine layer never fully lifted, and by sunrise, the summit was surrounded by thick fog, creating near white out conditions.

No sunrise to be seen, but a beautiful foggy hike nonetheless. 🥾🏔🥾🌲

In the gardens of Clouded in Light, the lavender hums with life. Bumble bees drift from blossom to blossom, gathering nectar while carrying pollen between flowers in one of nature's oldest partnerships. The quiet exchange between pollinator and flower has shaped Earth's landscapes for millions of years and continues to support the ecosystems that, in turn, support us. 🐝

This crimson-red dahlia cultivar is among the most striking flowers in the garden. Layers of velvety petals radiate outward with remarkable symmetry, while rich ruby and burgundy tones seem to deepen and soften as the light shifts throughout the day.

Dahlias are unique in their generosity. Unlike many spring-blooming flowers that put on a brief display, a healthy dahlia continues producing bloom after bloom from midsummer well into autumn. Delicate in every detail, the lacecap blooms of the hydrangea serrata reveal an elegance that often goes unnoticed. Soft blue, white, and lavender tones blend seamlessly across each petal. Fine, velvety hairs catch the light and add texture, visible only up close. Through a macro lens, an ordinary flower becomes a world of extraordinary beauty.
