I knew when I had a client reach out to me last year to capture her daughter's year-old portraits that I needed to do something for the community.

Then, when a close friend reached out to me for the same type of session this year, I was happy that money didn't have to be an object in order to capture these precious moments.

If you didn't know, Robyn Studios offers free 30-minute sessions to any family, parent, or guardian with a child who is turning 1. A little birthday gift from me to you, to celebrate your first year with your little one and to celebrate how much they have grown. I know when you have kids, especially for the first time, money can be tight. I didn't want any child's first birthday moments to be missed just because of money. As much as I value my time and my experience, this particular photo session felt important to offer as a free opportunity.

I know what it's like to lose a best friend, both human and dog. So, when Elizabeth asked me to capture some final memories of her and Cooper, I was grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a special, but hard, moment.

Elizabeth, thank you for trusting me with this session. I hope you love the pictures, and that it helps you to remember how special your relationship with Cooper always will be. Even if he is gone in body now, the memories and bond you built will last forever.

Honoring the country I believe in and know that we can be every day, but on this day, feel it is especially important to speak on.

I am blessed to be surrounded by so many good souls who want the same for this place we call home. Not necessarily the same route to get to serving well, and perhaps not even the same definition of what that well looks like.

But nevertheless, we persist towards a loving future where tragedies such as occurred 25 years ago today will serve as a reminder of where we have come from, but not where we gave up. We, as a country, have a duty to learn from hardships, grow through heartache, and conquer fear that otherwise could paralyze us, or turn us into beings we cannot, and would perhaps even rather not, recognize.

May the hard things we have endured in the past bring us closer together instead of tear us apart, while teaching us to love one another well instead of unabashedly screaming out hatred, frustration, and the other ugly parts of being human that we have a choice to outgrow instead of embrace.
