Wondering what to wear for summer family photos?

The goal is not to match perfectly — it’s to coordinate in a way that feels timeless, comfortable, and true to your family.

For summer sessions, I love soft colors, breathable fabrics, natural textures, and outfits that allow you to sit, walk, snuggle, and play.

Think linen, cotton, gauze, soft denim, subtle florals, neutral sandals, and pieces that can move with you.

Y’all yesterday was the perfect day. I had the cutest studio session with a mama and her two adorable girls. After that I popped by a free “yard sale” and got some fun new toys for Skyler. After that I was lucky enough to be gifted an entire client closet of maternity dresses as well as tons of newborn wraps, backdrops and headbands. I will forever be grateful for this generous gift. Keep an eye out because I will be doing a model call to get visuals of all the dress on. So if you are expecting, get ready!!

Before family photos, there are always so many little things to think about.

What should everyone wear?
Are snacks (to bribe) okay?
What if the kids are wild?
What if someone gets a scrape the day before?
What if my toddler refuses to smile?

Deep breath. I’ve got you.

And as a mom myself, my biggest advice is this: let the little things go when you can. Magic happens when kids feel free to play, explore, snuggle, and be themselves.

Getting ready for family photos and not sure what everyone should wear?

A few simple wardrobe choices can make a big difference in how your final images feel. The goal isn’t to match perfectly — it’s to coordinate in a way that feels timeless, comfortable, and true to your family.

Think soft colors, texture, layers, movement, and pieces you can actually sit, walk, snuggle, and play in.

And on the flip side? Neon colors, big logos, sunglasses, graphic sneakers, clothes that are too tight, too short, or too baggy can pull attention away from what matters most: your connection.

I've had this on my to do list since basically the day I started my business. But one thing I've learned is that you can't get everything done on day one, and everything is a work in progress. Not every baby dives face-first into their cake... and honestly, that's part of the fun. 🎂

Kailani took her time, studied every detail, and eventually worked up the courage to give her birthday cake a tiny taste (one of my favorite photos! 😛). I feel like I saved the best for last. I do love some messy cake smash photos!
