Who hasn’t fantasized about going to Europe for one of those dreamy countryside cooking retreats?

Inspired by this, Bella Luna Farms (if you’ve ever been there, you know it’s a slice of Italy right here in Washington) organized its first masterclass this summer - and it was what dreams were made of.

On site were Chefs Chef Jason Wilson, Nicco Muratore and Marianna Marianna (Seattle, WA) teaching our students everything from knife skills, to preserving techniques, to stocking their pantry on all the essentials and of course, on making a feast for the senses in our pantry kitchen.

Owner, master gardener and farmer Pam was also there to teach a class on creating floral arrangements fit for a feast.

The week was capped by a meal shared with family and friends of the attendees, with dishes they made with their own hands throughout the week. Special shoutout to our w**e partners Momento Cellars for the delicious vino for the celebration dinner!

I’ve never imagined myself a fashion photographer since I’d never been much of a ‘fashion girlie’ my whole life, but I’m a big proponent of stepping out of comfort zones.

Recently, Andrew Parsons and colton jacobs organized another of their very popular Creative Socials at Studio G and I decided to swing by.

I knew I’d probably be the oldest auntie around, but my reasons were two fold: To meet some young, new photographers and to visit the building where I used to have my studio.

I didn’t stay too long because like I said, this was very popular and the space was teeming with talent. Since I wasn’t really looking to grow my fashion portfolio, it seemed only polite to make space (but not before snapping a few).

I did wander around the building for a while (it smelled the same, and it’s been over ten years since I left haha!) and relished the nostalgia. Bemis, you’ve remained a vibe.

Thanks Colton and Andrew! This was no small effort. Your generosity in your time, in sharing your space, in putting the whole thing together is truly what the Seattle photography community has been, and still is, all about.

Not gonna lie.

When Daniele and Sam, whom I met at Daniele’s sister’s wedding last summer, emailed me to be their wedding photographer, I did a little dance.

I did a whole ass dance actually, full song. Redbone’s Come and Get Your Love, because I’m old and nerdy.

Since then, I’d been waiting all year for this day to arrive.

And now that it’s happened, I can report it’s everything I’d hoped it would be. Daniele and Sam, are everything and more.

From the day we’d met, Sam and Daniele have been warm, generous, whimsical, silly and so joyful with each other, their people, with me, that I wanted desperately to be in their orbit. Every interaction, every email, call down to yesterday when I got to reconnect with Daniele’s family and meet Sam’s, has filled me with all the feelings of why I do this job. And these photos? Capture the vibrance, color and sheer glee that these two bring with them, everywhere they go.

THANK YOU, Sam and Daniele, for giving me the chance to celebrate you, to do this for your families (again!) and to just BE with you.

And thank you SO MUCH to our vendor team. You made SO MUCH beauty for our brides yesterday for me to photograph, I truly cannot wait to share everything with you.

Ps. Atoma - those rosette cookies? I’m coming back for more and I’m bringing friends.

I used to shoot weddings fully on film.

I’ve always missed it, but it just wasn’t competitive and economically efficient for our market.

Perhaps in 2027, when I hit 20 years in the business, it’s time I returned to my roots.

Film just gives me a joy that digital has never been able to replicate.

I will still shoot digital for corporate/non-wedding work but I think in our ultra perfect world thanks to AI, analog may be something like-minded couples will enjoy.

In any case, I will enjoy my job a lot more again.

10 years ago, on Nov 5th 2016, I documented the wedding of Karyn and Jason at S**o Park.

Since then, I’ve watched their lives on social media like I do every couple with whom I stay in touch.

I watched their little family grow. I watched as they started their own dental practice. Watched their outdoor adventures as K&J are avid hikers and campers, bringing their then 2.5 month old baby M with them on his first foray into the big and beautiful wilderness that is the PNW. Life happened, good and bad, and I felt as though I was part of it all. Like watching my kids grow up, somewhat.

A few months ago, Karyn emailed to ask if I would photograph their anniversary, but it would require a hike.

Now as much as I fancy myself an outdoors person, I suffer through it mostly for the photography.

And for my dear clients.

And so I became an adventure photographer for the first time in my life, having declined quite a few such opportunities in my career for fear of dying. I am very clumsy and have tripped over nothing, putting myself in mortal danger in less precarious circumstances, more times than I care to admit.

I am glad to report that I made it out alive, with the photos and some videos to show for it.

And as I drove home last night, I thought to myself.

“I wonder if I could come back here next weekend at sunrise instead…” 😅.

Classic. Getting ahead of myself again once the terror of not falling backwards to my death has subsided.

Thank you, Karyn and Jason, for inviting me. This, as I’ve said, is now a core memory. The best part was getting to meet M and seeing you guys again.

The scenery was a bonus.

(not tagging for the obvious - will leave that to all you braver, younger souls! 🤣

Ps. Don’t ask me where this was. It’s off trail and I blacked out.

Recently, Loke Uei Tan and I threw a little party for some close friends and chosen family to celebrate our 25 years together as husband and wife.

Of all the things I was most nervous about, was this speech. I’d spent quite some time writing and rewriting it, over weeks. Which was the part I enjoyed.

Delivering it? Not so much.

Why speech when it’s one of the things I dislike most in the world?

Because one of Loke’s love languages, is words of affirmation. And I myself DO love the written word, if not the spoken. I’m actually probably a better writer than I am a photographer, when I put my mind to it.

And so I got over myself, practiced and practiced, and managed not to fall apart until the very end.

This is by no means any kind of thesis on marriage or love. Loke and I, we’re still pretty much in the finding out stage (after much f-ing around).

For someone in the wedding industry, this is almost ironic.

Perhaps I’ll live long enough to write another one of these, in the next 25.
