The feet on this osprey tells why they are so amazing at fishing. I didn't get to see this osprey catch a fish tonight, but he did seem to enjoy splashing and bathing in the lake. Not too far away, his mate was feeding the young, so I guess he was just enjoying a short break. πŸ˜πŸ˜‰β˜ΊοΈ

One of three little fledged owlets that I had the pleasure of seeing tonight. I think that they startled me as much as I startled them as they flew off in various directions. Luckily , I was still able to capture a few images.

These images were taken on my last outing to the heron rookery which was April 30th. Because it had been awhile, I decided to make a quick trip out before sunset last night and was shocked to find that the rookery has been abandoned by the herons. At a time when the young should be hatching and feeding activity peaking, it was eerily quiet. Not a single heron in sight.
A google search tells this could be due to numerous reasons. Human interference, predator attacks (eagles or owls), or lack a a good food source. I may never know the reason, but they will be missed.

Was hoping to spend some time with these little guys again yesterday afternoon between appointments, but, after two hours, no sightings. The time has become for them to learn to hunt and develop independence, and I'm guessing that means less time to play and relax. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜

Red fox kits.
Did you know....???
Red foxes were introduced to the US in the 1700's. Europeans brought the fox over on ships because they enjoyed hunting them. These foxes bred with native foxes to produce the red fox that we know today.

How about a Flicker Friday? Hoping these two have found the perfect nesting spot for raising their young. Flickers will lay 5-8 eggs, often in tree cavities they have hollowed out. I'll be keeping an eye on this one as it has great potential for photographing them, while not being so close as to disturb them.

Tonight's find was a Northern Harrier hawk. Beautiful birds that fly low over the grasslands, following the contours of the land. They nest and most often feed and perch on the ground. I was lucky to catch this one using a fence post as a perch during a brief rain shower.
