Lightening and ice
I recently saw an aerial shot of an ice covered sylvan lake in Custer State park but when I got there it was mostly snow covered. I did manage to find a small patch of clean ice and I liked the way the fractures in the frozen surface resembled lightening, especially against the dark blue depths of the water below.

When you can’t get out and shoot....
We’re (and still are)in the midst of a major winter storm, with many of the roads either closed or no travel advised, so my wife and me sat in the upstairs bedroom sipping wine while I practiced picking out compositions with a long lens.

Golden hour at Bear Butte

Another image from my visit to Bear Butte state park earlier this fall, this one at golden hour. The ditch in the foreground sometimes is filled with water and would have made a nice lead-in to the rest of the photo, but It captures the quiet, peaceful mood I was feeling at the time.

Black and white tranquility

The pre-dawn light show was over by the time I could get in position for this shot so I processed it black and white. A 30 second shutter speed softened the ripples on the lake for a more tranquil reflection of earth and sky.

Should have had my hip waders

I sure hope this image portrays a feeling of a dreary, foggy and damp day because it sure was. After walking through the knee high brush to get to this shooting spot my jeans were soaked. I have hip waders for fishing but I guess I’m going to have to bring them along on days like this.

Color Guard
