Branding…over sooo many years. This year has been curious for me. Nostalgia at the forefront of my mind. Creativity found me in the middle of the pen. Learning to hone my voice, the things that mattered…not only to me, to those surrounding me. The relationships, emotions, quietness of responsibility transferring to the next generation. I’m still here, and sometimes, I pick up the camera so I don’t fall down.

To say I’ve been busy over the last several weeks is an understatement. Although, after nearly 17 years of being self employed…you see it coming. Your business is cyclical, although it feels deliciously chaotic at times. TS Eliot comes to mind here:

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

— T.S. Eliot

It’s not about picnics and potato salad today…remember and honor those (and their families) who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Each one has its own unique characteristics and I have to give each one room to creatively breathe. The elements that make it for me can be singular or a combination of colors, perspective, focus, form, textures. Yeah, each of my branding images have their own unique creative place. It’s not about the F-Stop.

Out with Michael .dow.90 at his branding.

Jobs - no matter the size of the hands, there’s always a job that can be done at branding. For those little hands, it’s a great way of giving them a taste of responsibility, and encouragement, which goes a long ways towards their future.

Thanks Michael .dow.90 for having us out with ya!

Over time I’ve found different elements that really motivate me, maybe it’s movement, color, or textures…could be a combination of all those. So when Jodi .carter.simper was out on Windy for the other day…all those creative feels came into play!

The first exposure I wanted to show movement while keeping her still. Slowing down the shutter speed to 1/50th made balancing the exposure with an aperture of f16 and an ISO of 50. Now, keep this in mind…especially those of us belly deep in dirt, when stopping down to f16 or any of these deep apertures, you’ll see EVERY dust spot, scratch, or piece of dirt on your lens! Good thing there’s the dust removal in Lightroom!

During this shoot for and with Hadley and Leann I had asked Leann to stand with her saddle in the barn door (first image). It’s a good go-to for a shoot, I call it the 4, 4, at 4 rule.

Find a doorway with indirect light, set my exposure to F4, 1/400s, at ISO400. The light falls off quickly leaving you with two variables in editing to control, the highlights and shadows. Pretty simple. Pretty quick. And you don’t have to waste time. Now, that exposure is a starting point. Look at the image for tonal contrast and adjust as needed.

It doesn’t take Mother’s Day to recognize all she does…in front of the camera or behind it, at her desk or out in client homes. Always responding nicely to the relentless question…”what’s for dinner?” - coffee in bed on a Sunday is her style, a later get out of bed day, full sun while out riding in the arena, like now…

Nah, Mother’s Day isn’t enough for someone like Joe she carries the weight of our world quietly and still finds a way to smile through all of it. I love you! 😘
