Many event photographers have second shooters...another person behind a camera to take raw images that can be edited by the photographer to match their particular style. I am not an event photographer. My style is pretty unfiltered, as natural as possible. This weekend, at the wedding, someone asked me what kind of photography I do. I said, "I am a relationship photographer." I want to capture relationships. That's why the weddings I do are of people I know. I can feel them. I feel like I understand them. Of course, when I shoot a big event, I need a second shooter...someone who (besides being behind a camera) understands me, my style, and someone who I can communicate with without many words. I happen to have married that person. Lyle is a wonder with his work. While I get people to come alive in front of me and put them at ease, Lyle sees the world from quiet corners and interesting angles. He turns his memory card over to me, and I marvel at the way he watched events unfold. Sure, sometimes we have the same photo from the same angle. But often we have both captured something important, something worth seeing, but something the other missed. I could not do my work without him and I certainly could not be the photographer I am without him.

I have never seen two people laugh so much at their wedding. These two were relaxed, at peace, and so in love. I don’t do weddings usually. It has to be the right person. Willa was the right person: a woman I have know since she was a child and who feels like a cup of warm tea to everyone who meets her. She puts you at ease and makes you want to stay awhile. When I met Jackson yesterday, I saw her perfect soulmate: a busy bee making honey for that tea. Sweetness and smarts and loyalty and and energy. I loved yesterday. I loved how simple and perfect it was. I loved how they didn’t want the traditional photos but pictures of all the people there just being. I took ceremony pictures and bridal party pictures and headshots and family photos, and it was a blast. Willa and Jackson, if yesterday is any indication of what your forever is going to be like, I expect it will be filled with connection, contentment, humor, grace, wide open spaces, good people, great views, and more love than can be measured. Today, I got to witness a very special event: the retirement of a chief in the US Coast Guard. The speeches I heard reminded me of how remarkably important and taxing the work he did was. They also reminded me how much support family and friends gave him along the way. I cried as I photographed. It was a beautiful ceremony, and I can’t wait to cull this gallery.

August Minis are LIVE! Because costs continue to go up, I am doing a sliding scale on these. I want to always be inclusive of all people and that includes their races, genders, AND socio-economic position. The scale is listed in the sign up, and if you are able to pay the top of the scale, that is wonderful. It feels like a very fair price of materials and time. If not, I will never ask why or judge. Do what you can how you can. Okay, here goes!
