This is a comparison of photos taken in a truly dark sky vs a rural dark sky.
The first photo was taken a TK Lawless Dark Sky Park 6/12/26. It is 6 minutes of exposure at ISO 50 with a Sony A7Cii and a 20mm 1.8 lens. The second photo was taken on 6/23/2014 with a Sony A900 and a Konica Minolta 17-35 at 17mm and 2.8. ISO 3200.
You can see that even though I was at a dark sky park, the Milkway is to the south and the light pollution from South Bend seriously impacts the ability to see the stars - even with a long exposure.

I still can't believe I got to experience this. I went to the Smoky Mountain National Park to photograph the Blue Ghost Fireflies. I wasn't sure where to find them, but I went to a spot I've photographed the synchronized fireflies and got lucky. The first photo was taken the first night I was there. I noticed there were a lot of fireflies behind the fireplace. The next day, I went back and found a path up behind the fireplace. I returned at night to setup my cameras and had a very good experience. However, when I went to go back to the trail, I had a very difficult time finding it. It's pretty dark at 11 PM in May! A bit of panic ensured, but I reminded myself I hadn't gone very far, Eventually, I was able to figure it out and make it back to the campsite.

Remember - it's now firefly season. The fireflies only have spent 2 years underground waiting for this opportunity to mate and create the next generation. Turn your outside lighting off to give them the best chance of finding their mate!

My first time seeing the Northern Lights and it was spectacular. I started out with a 50 mm lens on my camera but quickly realized this show was too big. I quickly swapped to my 20 mm 1.8 lens and caught all the colors of the rainbow. I never expected to see something like this. Pinks, purples, yellows, green and even a bit of orange! A very memorable night.

Here is another one from Baltimore's Inner Harbor. It's such a great place to get reflection photographs. The building with the blue wave is the National Aquarium.

I was in Baltimore for work which fortunately had an office near the Inner Harbor. After I was done for the day, I would take my camera down to the harbor and hope for some interesting reflections. This is the Hard Rock Cafe sign.

I'm honored to have one of my photographs chosen as the Director's Award in their monthly juried photo exhibition. This was taken in my backyard several years ago. I have enjoyed star trail photography for some time and had recently gotten better at firefly photography. In this image, I combined the two interests.

I was photographing fireflies near this location and becoming irritated with the lights flashing behind me thinking it was some inconsiderate person with a powerful flashlight. When I turned around and headed for the car, I realized it was an approaching thunderstorm. I quickly setup my camera and started firing, trying to pick up the flashes of lightning. Fortunately, there were still quite a few fireflies flashing. I then stacked them, picking out the best lightning images. I upped the contrast to create a more ominous look.
