The Orion Nebula is a popular Astrophotography target. It is large and easy to find. I had though about getting more heavily into Astrophotography but there is a pretty large learning curve. I did purchase an 8 inch astrograph with the idea of doing more, but you need a second telescope and camera for tracking and I never got around to spending the money. I did attach one of my cameras and captured this single frame image. It doesn't come anywhere near what others have done, but for a single image, I thought it was ok.

I cannot believe I was able to capture this. This is the closest that Jupiter and Saturn appeared in the sky since 1226. It was a cloudy night (as usual for events like this!), but knowing I had one night to try for this, I waited and my patience paid off. This was done not with a telescope, but a telephoto lens. Focusing was very difficult as this are very small in the viewfinder, but I was able to get it focused enough you can see Saturn's rings and the 4 galilean moons. This was December 21, 2020

I wish I had put a wider lens on my camera for this photograph but it is pretty cool anyway. I took a night time light painting tour in Antelope Canyon. The first thing I did was setup a camera at the entrance in the hope I would capture some star trails. I had no idea of which way the entrance pointed. As you can see, it was almost directly north. I let the camera run taking pictures every few seconds while we explored the rest of the canyon. Thanks to Lionel Bigthumb for the tour.

Since I was out for the Eclipse and Saturn was in the sky, I decided to see if I could capture it with just a telephoto lens. Not great, but at least you can tell it's Saturn.

How did they do it?

Dr. Danielle Adams and Christian Luginbuhl will take us through Flagstaff’s remarkable dark-sky story, from the nation’s first outdoor lighting ordinance in 1958 to the creation of the International Dark Sky City program and Flagstaff’s 2026 retrofit of 4,000 streetlights to narrowband amber LEDs.

Along the way, they’ll share the policies, science and practical strategies that demonstrate communities can grow, illuminate their streets safely and still protect — and even restore — star-filled skies.
