What’s better than one short-eared owl on Superb Owl Sunday? Two shorties!! They were fighting on this warmer evening in January in Loudon county, VA. I prob won’t get the shorties at Blackwater since I don’t want to risk it on Maple Dam Rd so this unassuming field with harriers and shorties will have to do. Too bad it’s all snow/ice-covered and you can’t drive down to the prime photo spot right now.

Fabulous foxes of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Reserve, 10/25/25. After only seeing one around 1:30 pm, we came back after lunch at nearby McGlynn’s pub to see 4 other foxes. I believe we saw the 4 kits and their Mom, though I could be wrong. The kits are distinguishable by a small cut/slit in one fox’s left ear, the injured left eye of another fox, the very light almost leucistic coloring of another fox, and the dark and thinness of another fox, and the full coat, body, and tail of one proud mama.
