🦋 The Monarchs Are Back in Town!

Western Monarch butterflies are returning to Santa Cruz for the winter! I stopped by the Monarch Grove at Natural Bridges a few days ago and spotted some of the first clusters forming high in the eucalyptus trees.

According to the visitor center, approximately 650 monarchs have been counted so far. That’s still a small number, but it’s encouraging to hear that there are more than at this time last year! I also checked Lighthouse Field, but didn’t spot any monarchs there.

If you’re planning a visit to Natural Bridges, here are a few tips:

🦋 Bring binoculars or a long camera lens. The butterflies are clustering very high in the trees right now.

🦋 Want to see them flying? Visit during the warmer part of the day, when the butterflies are more active. They typically begin flying when temperatures reach around 55°F or warmer, especially in sunny, calm conditions.

🦋 Want to see the clusters? Early morning or late afternoon is usually best, when cooler temperatures keep the butterflies gathered together.

It’s wonderful to see these beautiful butterflies returning to our coast. Hopefully, many more will arrive in the coming weeks!

Golden Prize 🦉

A young Great Horned Owl, about seven months old, stands guard over its prize, a freshly caught rat delivered by dad. And what better way to enjoy dinner than in the beautiful golden light of sunset?

Judging by that smile (do owls ever smile 😉), I’d say this owl is pretty happy with its meal! Its sibling, however, wasn’t quite as pleased. It kept calling for dinner, but dad only brought one rat!

Uber Owl 🦉

Dinner Is on Its Way!

A male Great Horned Owl perches at the top of a tree with a freshly caught rat in his beak, then spreads his wings and takes off to deliver dinner to one of his seven-month-old juveniles.

I was surprised to see dad still providing food at this age. The young owls should be dispersing soon to establish territories of their own, although they may remain in the area for several more weeks or even a couple of months.

⁣Sometimes it’s the smallest birds that have the most interesting details.⁣
⁣
I photographed this Scaly-breasted Munia during a recent trip to Encinitas, California. I’ve always enjoyed getting a closer look at the patterns and textures that are easy to overlook in the field. The intricate markings on this little bird really caught my attention.⁣

What a beautiful way to end a whale watching trip on Monterey Bay!⁣

As the sun was setting, we passed a nesting colony of Brandt’s Cormorants. The birds were silhouetted against the colorful evening sky, with shades of orange, yellow, and blue providing a beautiful backdrop.⁣

After an afternoon spent watching whales, this was one last photographic opportunity as we returned to the harbor. Sometimes the best moments come when you least expect them!⁣
