Positive Vista Photography & Art by Portia Shao 🎨Artist 📷 Photographer
🖼️ Shop Fine Art at shop.positivevista.com I love animals, and have photographed many different pets in my studio. See my Places gallery.

I have owned and operated my portrait photography studio located in downtown Santa Cruz since 2007. As an artist and photographer, I use camera, lightings, and computer as the tools to create photographic art. From my travels I have also photographed many wild animals, and birds. Raptors are my favorite birds, big cats and elephants are my favorite animals. Some examples are in my Wildlife gallery

. Travel is one of my passions, and I always have my cameras with me when I travel so I can capture some essence of the places I experience. I painted in watercolor before taking up photography professionally. I want my photographs to not just be realistic but also artistic and creative. Some examples are the Polaroid SX-70 manipulated iimages in my Polaroids gallery, they have a painterly look, each is unique. I also have taken up painting digitally on the computer, usually starting from a photograph, which can be a lousy cell phone image, but turn it into a painting. There are examples of them in my Paintings gallery, and in my Dimash gallery. Degrees and credentials:
Master of Photography (M.Photog.) from PPA in January 2017
Certified Professional Photographer (CPP)
Member of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) since 2007
Member of American Society of Photographers (ASP) since 2017

What has your art collection taught you?

Not about art history or markets but about your own taste, your spaces, the way you spend your attention.

"Dimash Panda Award 2023 on red carpet" is part of an ongoing conversation on my side of the screen.

I would genuinely like to hear what you have learned.

When people move house, they make a hierarchy without realizing it.

Some things get donated, some get stored, some make the journey regardless of whether they make logical sense in the new space.

Art almost always travels. It is rarely the practical choice that moves with you. It is the things that meant something. Has that been true for you?

What have you moved more than once, and would "Jamba Juice downtown Santa Cruz" make that list?

People sometimes feel they need to be able to articulate why they want a particular work before they are allowed to buy it. That is not how it works.

The attraction does not need a defense. You do not have to be able to explain Northern Lights Iceland to someone who asks; you just have to know it belongs in your space.

The explanation, if you want one, tends to arrive later on its own.

Every work that reaches a collector is the result of many decisions, including the decision not to show what came before it.

The finished work is not the whole story. It is the end of a longer, quieter process that most collectors never see.

When you live with Himalayan sunrise, you are living with the result of the artistic process and all that comes with it.

Interior designers often talk about sightlines. They're the natural path your eye travels when you enter or move through a room.

Most people never think about this consciously, but they feel it. Art placed directly in a sightline changes a room immediately.

Placement is as intentional as the work itself.

Where would you put Elephants head to head?

A lot of people hold off on collecting art because they rent and feel uncertain about committing to walls they do not own. But art does not belong to a wall. It belongs to you.

Renting is not a reason to live with bare walls. It is a reason to collect work that matters enough to keep moving (and growing) with you.

"Badass Coffee downtown Santa Cruz" and my other work are connected to the people who love them, not just the places they're displayed.
