An iPhone shot I got of a differential grasshopper I found that was still alive a couple days before Halloween. I liked the way it looked with the fall colors in the back drop.

Earlier this month I was able to capture a couple ruby-crowned kinglets feeding in my maple trees. A lot of patience is required to photograph these little birds. They don’t sit still for long!

When I stepped outside this afternoon to see how warm it had gotten since this morning, I noticed some spots on both of my backyard lilac bushes that were flowering. This is highly unusual as my lilacs normally bloom during the spring during late May or early June. A few years ago my lilacs bloomed in September, which was the first time I’d seen any fall blooms in the time I’ve lived in my house. I never expected to see any new flowers so close to Halloween.

That aside I thought it would be fun to try capturing one of the blooms with my neighbor’s maple tree and their gorgeous autumn red leaves in the background. Having the lilac bloom and the tree juxtaposed in the image represented the contrast of spring and fall for me. I snapped this and few other images with my iPhone and tried playing around with the macro setting on it.

I hadn’t seen or photographed a chipmunk in a long time. I was pleasantly surprised to see this one chilling out near a park bench in the same area I photographed my lifer winter wren a little later the same day. This park is a popular spot for locals and visitors so this little guy wasn’t too afraid of me when we first saw each other.

It’s been kind of a slow fall for me for interesting bird sightings but last month I unknowingly got a lifer when I snapped these images of a winter wren while taking a break on a park bench. It was a little over an hour before sunset so the bird was in deep shadow, flitting about in shrubs and a small tree near a marsh. I could tell it was a wren and just thought it was a northern house wren. But since it was near a marsh I wasn’t 100% sure. I was pleasantly surprised when more experienced birding friends and a bird ID group told me it was actually a winter wren. I had to shoot this at such a low shutter speed to account for the low light that I’m shocked I got anything in focus with how much this little guy was moving around.

I never fail to see one of these albino eastern gray squirrels in my neighborhood each year. I actually shot this photo from inside my van at the end of my road as I was leaving the subdivision. They are actually not that rare in the local population. It’s more rare I think for me to see a black squirrel here, unlike my hometown where black is the dominant color.

This was the best view I could get of a bald eagle sitting on a log just a few feet from a park path. I saw it as I rounded a turn walking with my child. I snapped a few images then it took off to another perch behind me along the lake shore.

I just got my iPhone 17 Pro recently and upgraded from a 6 year old iPhone 12 Pro. I took one of my children to our local zoo today and decided to play with the phone camera when opportunities came up. This captive black neck stilt came up close enough to allow me to shoot through the netting and get some phone shots. I’m happy with how these turned out with the phone in poor lighting conditions. I also shot this in Apple’s pro raw to give me more leeway in editing later.
