A New Way to See the Falls

Tahquamenon Falls has a new ADA-accessible walkway to the top of the Upper Falls, and let me tell you… this one is a game changer!

For the first time, I was able to take Brian all the way down, where there used to be only steps. ❤️

The walkway itself is impressive, weaving through the landscape with a structure that feels like it belongs there. Along the way, you can still see the remnants of the old stairs — a little reminder of how people once made their way to the falls, and how much has changed to make this experience accessible to more people.

And then there’s the view.

WOW.

Standing down there and looking out at the Upper Falls as it cascades over is something everyone should experience. The water, the rocks, the trees… it’s one of those views that makes you stop and say, “Yep. This is why I love Michigan.”

Of course, there was one tiny detail I hadn't fully considered…

What goes DOWN… must come back UP. 😂

So there I was, pushing Brian back up the accessible walkway, wondering why I didn't pack a personal trainer.

Turns out, it really wasn't that bad!

Either the walkway is easier than it looks, or I've been seriously underestimating my strength. 💪🤣 I'm sure it's the walkway.

But honestly, being able to share this view with Brian made every push worth it.

Sometimes accessibility isn't just about making a place easier to visit.

It's about making sure **everyone gets a chance to make the memories.**

And maybe giving the caregiver a free workout while you're at it. 😉

**Where There’s a Will, There’s a Reflection**

I drove all around Sault Ste. Marie looking for *the* spot to photograph the International Bridge reflecting in the river. Surely, there had to be one.

Except the riverfront was locked down—literally. Between the Soo Locks and all the fencing, getting to the water wasn’t exactly an option.

So I improvised.

I found a muddy puddle, set my camera down at ground level, and let that little puddle do what the river wouldn’t.

Sometimes the perfect reflection isn’t where you expect to find it. Sometimes you just have to get a little dirty to get the shot. 📷

✨ Where two countries meet, the night comes alive. 🌉

The International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie is more than a crossing between Michigan and Ontario—it’s a piece of the landscape that feels almost magical after dark.

Lit by a constellation of red, white, and blue lights, its massive steel arches stretch across the St. Marys River, standing strong against the deep blue of the night. Add the glow of passing traffic and those beautiful starbursts from the lights, and suddenly a bridge becomes the star of the show.

There’s something special about photographing places that connect us—especially when they look this incredible beneath a Michigan night sky. 💙

# # # Seeing Rifle River in a Whole New Way 🌲💚

There’s something pretty special about standing at the top of the lookout tower at Rifle River Recreation Area and taking in the view—but now, even more people can experience the landscape in a whole new way.

An **EnChroma viewer**, designed to help people with color vision deficiency distinguish colors more clearly, has been added to the tower! 🌈🔭

Michigan’s forests, fields, and changing seasons are full of color, and this new addition helps make that experience more accessible to visitors who may see the world’s colors differently.

It’s a beautiful reminder that enjoying our state parks is about more than the view—it’s about making sure **everyone gets a chance to see it.** 💚

Some places feel different after dark.

The Jewett Observation Tower at Rifle River State Recreation Area stands quietly among the trees, its weathered boards telling stories of another time. Above it, the Milky Way stretches across the Michigan sky—a river of stars flowing through the darkness.

For a moment, the old tower didn’t feel abandoned or forgotten. It felt like it belonged exactly where it was… standing beneath billions of stars, watching over the forest while the universe put on its own spectacular show.

Michigan has a way of reminding us that sometimes the most beautiful views aren't the ones you find during the day. ✨🌌

There’s something about being on the water when the sun begins its slow descent.
On Tawas Bay, the evening light turned the water to liquid gold, creating a shimmering path that seemed to lead straight toward the horizon. And right in the middle of it all, a lone sailboat drifted through the glow—small against the vastness, but perfectly placed.
For just a moment, everything felt still.
No rush. No noise. Just wind in the sail, ripples on the bay, and that unmistakable Michigan magic that makes you stop and take it all in. 🌅⛵️

Some sunsets feel beautiful. Others feel almost impossible.
At Tawas Point Lighthouse, the sun had already slipped below the horizon, but the sky wasn’t finished putting on a show. Soft blues melted into lavender, pink clouds stretched across the horizon, and the lighthouse stood quietly beneath it all.
For a moment, Michigan looked less like a real place and more like something painted from a dream.
Maybe that’s the magic of staying just a little longer after sunset. ✨💜

There’s something magical about climbing a lighthouse staircase. 🖤

This spiral staircase inside the Tawas Point Lighthouse seemed to invite me upward, with every step, curve, and intricate pattern leading my eye toward the center. The light filtering through the openings created an unexpected play of shadows and shapes—and suddenly, the climb became a photography moment.

Sometimes the most beautiful views aren’t found at the top. Sometimes, you just have to stop along the way and look up. 📷✨

For years, I've chased sharp details—the perfect focus, the crisp horizon, every wave frozen in time.

This time, I let go.

This is my very first attempt at **In-Camera Motion (ICM)**. Instead of capturing exactly what I saw, I captured what the moment *felt* like. As the sun slipped below the horizon, I intentionally moved the camera during the exposure, allowing the colors of Lake Michigan to blend into soft brushstrokes of blue, lavender, and gold.

It's a little unnerving to blur an image on purpose after spending so much time trying to make everything perfectly sharp. But that's the beauty of learning—sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone to discover a whole new way of seeing.

I have a lot to learn, but I think this is the beginning of an exciting creative journey.

What do you think of my first ICM image?
