A pair of young males getting some practice in before rut. This was taken two weeks ago and since then, things have started to heat up in the park! Large males have started taking harems and larger males will be challenging them any minute. Can’t wait to be up there this next month

The woods have been quiet lately. Many birds have started heading south and others are too busy feeding fledglings to come out and sing. These flycatcher shots are my last batch from a few weekends ago.

The end of summer lull always frustrates me but in a few months eagles and ducks will be back and I’ll have a whole month of elk rut starting this month.

No crazy light or action or dynamic composition, just a portrait of a summertime favorite of mine, the lazuli bunting. These guys come into our scrub/ponderosa forests in the foothills and really fill the air. They’re confident and sing from the top of branches, unlike a lot of more shy species that stay deeper in the bushes. They’ll be headed south in a few weeks and I’ll miss them dearly until next year
