More from my morning with a pair of Pied-billed Grebes.

I love how much a photo can change with just a few degrees difference in light angle. What was a completely orange and yellow scene in my last photos shifts to side light with darker blacks and greens showing through the water.

Happy Halloween!

I took some photos of a pied billed grebe the other morning. I appreciate the bravery of these little guys swimming up to the weird bush (me)

A pied-billed grebe at our local ponds.

The ducks are back! When songbirds leave Colorado in the fall, there’s a couple weeks of quiet before the ducks come down from the north. Elk rut is a nice distraction during this time but I always miss the birds. So far I’ve seen PB grebes, wood ducks, wigeons and eagles are coming back too. Excited for a frosty winter

A bull elk stretching out a stab wound (that spot behind his shoulder)

I was wondering why such a big bull would be by himself during rut but as he picked his head up and began to walk, it became apparent he was in pain. A hard fought season

Another shot from a few mornings ago with a northern Pygmy owl

I appreciate the trust is showed and continued to hunt as I slowly got into position. This session ended as it dove for prey and took off before I could find it again.

This bull was tired.

A full day of chasing the ladies, fighting his cousins and dodging tourists through the park will do that to you. I was happy when he picked the area we were in to calm down before heading off into the trees

A northern pygmy owl waits for breakfast to come scurrying into the field. The fall colors behind him made these some of my favorite Pygmy owl moments.

It was funny, even walking out to the truck, I wasn’t sure where I was going to shoot this morning. “Probably up the canyon” was my only thought and it led to him! Funny how that works out
