Caught this on the Vista Bridge in downtown Portland. I was at Pittock but the gate didn’t open so I left at 7 and found this bridge to be peaceful even with the overcast.

I drive over this daily for work and today, the sun was sunning hard Af in October, in Portland, Oregon. I had no choice but to shoot.

Too dark to see anything, and I still got sharp focus. Here’s the trick 👇

📍 Pittock Mansion, Portland

Confession first: I shot this sunrise timelapse with the wrong filter. I usually run an 8-stop ND, but I swapped it for my Peter McKinnon Chroma Gold Mist VND/PL (2-5 stop) for sunset photos and forgot to switch back this morning. 🤦‍♂️ Honestly, the glow kind of worked.

How I got focus in the dark:
1️⃣ Crank the ISO all the way to max so you can actually see the scene
2️⃣ Frame the shot and get everything in focus
3️⃣ Switch the lens to manual focus to lock it in
4️⃣ Drop the ISO back down to 100

As the sun comes up, everything is already sharp, and ISO 100 leaves plenty of room to get creative in the edit.

⚙️ 100mm · 1/100 sec · f/5.6 · ISO 100

Save this for your next sunrise shoot, and tell me: what’s your worst “forgot to change the filter” moment?
